Horizontal Chimney Effect

J. M. Floryan et al.

Summary: This study analyzes natural convection in horizontal slots and demonstrates that a combination of heating and groove patterns can create horizontal fluid movement, known as the horizontal chimney effect. The relative positions of groove patterns and changes in groove geometry affect the flow. Simultaneous use of grooves and heating significantly enhances system effectiveness.

Wavenumber lock-in and spatial parametric resonance in convection

M. Z. Hossain et al.

Summary: The analysis of convection driven by spatial periodic heating reveals various responses depending on the Prandtl number. A primary convection is determined by the heating wavenumber, while secondary convection is characterized by a critical wavenumber established through an instability process. The competition between the RB mechanism and the spatial parametric resonance leads to four types of system responses.

Natural convection and pattern interaction in a two-dimensional vertical slot

J. M. Floryan et al.

Summary: The study of laminar natural convection in an infinite vertical slot with a corrugated profile and different heating profiles shows that the interaction between heating and topography patterns results in diverse fluid flow effects. The addition of grooves to an isothermal plate reduces vertical fluid flow and increases transverse heat flow, while sinusoidal heating generates counter-rotating rolls without net vertical flow. The combination of corrugation and periodic heating leads to various flow patterns, with the details controlled by a pattern interaction effect dictated by the relative positions of the heating and corrugation patterns.

Patterned convection in inclined slots

J. M. Floryan et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the laminar natural convection in inclined slots subjected to patterned heating. The results show that periodic heating applied at the lower plate generates net upward flow when the slot is tilted, while periodic heating applied at the upper plate produces net downward flow in the inclined situation. Addition of uniform heating promotes upward flow, while cooling has the opposite effect. There is a critical inclination angle where the maximum net flow rate is greatest.

Numerical simulation of a mixed vertical ventilation system

Jacob Nagler

Summary: This study presents the process of finding flow and temperature fields for a given ventilation system configuration through numerical simulations. The flow characteristics were simplified as 2D, incompressible, viscous, and in a constant state. The solution for the flow field was obtained using SOR methods, while the temperature field was calculated using the flow field data from the first stage. The influence of Reynolds number on the solution nature and the dependency of flow type on Reynolds number and its effect on the temperature field were highlighted in the study.

Experiments on thermal drift

A. Inasawa et al.

Summary: Thermal drift is a horizontal flow driven by the interaction between surface topography and heating patterns applied on the surface. The existence of thermal drift has been experimentally demonstrated, and its basic characteristics have been studied experimentally and theoretically, showing an excellent agreement between both sets of data.

Pattern interaction effect

J. M. Floryan et al.

Summary: This passage discusses the unexpected responses of physical systems to external stimuli, as well as the possibility of global responses when stimuli are organized into spatial patterns and originate from different physical origins. The interaction of properly tuned topography and temperature patterns demonstrates that combinations of weak stimuli can lead to global responses without bifurcations.
