Opportunities for improving feed efficiency and spinal health in New Zealand farmed Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) using genomic information

Megan Scholtens et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the potential for selecting improved feed conversion ratio (FCR) and reduced spinal curvature while also improving growth in Chinook salmon. The results showed that weight and condition factor had high heritabilities, while spinal curvature had a moderate heritability. Growth, feed intake, and FCR traits had low to moderate heritabilities, indicating potential for improvement through selection. Genetic correlations suggested that selection for growth could lead to some progress in improving FCR, but quantifying feed intake would result in larger gains. Additionally, an unfavorable genetic correlation was found between condition factor and spinal curvature, which should be considered in commercial breeding goals.

Impact of a divergent selective breeding programme on individual feed conversion ratio in Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus measured in groups by video-recording

Hugues de Verdal et al.

Summary: The study found that improving feed conversion ratio (FCR) through selective breeding programs has a significant impact on improving the efficiency of fish farming and sustainability. Breeding fish with different FCR levels can effectively improve FCR, although there is a negative correlation with weight gain.

Insects in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) diets - comparison between full-fat, defatted, and de-chitinised meals, and oil and exoskeleton fractions

P. Weththasinghe et al.

Summary: In the study, full-fat and de-chitinised black soldier fly larvae meals negatively impacted the physical quality of feed pellets for Atlantic salmon. However, these meals improved the growth rate of salmon. The defatted meal, oil, and exoskeleton supported similar growth performance as the control.

The relationship of feed intake, growth, nutrient retention, and oxygen consumption to feed conversion ratio of farmed saltwater Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha)

Jordan E. Elvy et al.

Summary: The feed conversion ratio (FCR) is important for reducing feed costs and environmental impacts. This study examined the correlation between FCR and physiological traits in farmed saltwater Chinook salmon. The results showed that high DWG and low DFI were strongly correlated with FCR efficiency.

New Zealand aquaculture industry: research, opportunities and constraints for integrative multitrophic farming

Jeanette M. E. Stenton-Dozey et al.

Summary: The New Zealand aquaculture industry is focused on Greenshell mussels, Chinook salmon and Pacific oysters, with a goal to increase export earnings to NZ$3 billion by 2035. To maintain its 'clean and green' image, the industry must demonstrate sustainable practices. Although there are regulatory barriers and lack of investment, the development of IMTA systems presents opportunities for sustainable farming designs and diversification within the sector.

P. Weththasinghe et al.

Summary: The study found that black soldier fly larvae meal and paste could replace up to 12.5% and 6.7% of dietary protein without compromising growth performance in Atlantic salmon.

An investigation of links between metabolic rate and feed efficiency in European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax

Charles Rodde et al.

Summary: The study investigated the prediction of individual FE in European sea bass, identifying significant effects of temperature and population on FE and RMR. However, individual FE and RMR were not significantly correlated, indicating a need for further investigation into the relationship between metabolic rate and feed efficiency.

Proteomic investigation of liver and white muscle in efficient and inefficient Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha): Fatty acid metabolism and protein turnover drive feed efficiency

Noah Esmaeili et al.

Summary: Proteomics was used to compare the protein profiles of efficient and inefficient Chinook salmon, revealing enrichment of lipid metabolism-related gene ontology terms in the liver of efficient fish and protein metabolism pathways in the white muscle. Inefficient fish showed enrichment of protein processing and proteolysis terms in the liver. This study provides a preliminary understanding of the molecular landscape of feed efficiency in Chinook salmon.
