Digital nudges to stimulate healthy and pro-environmental food choices in E-groceries

Michiel De Bauw et al.

Summary: In response to the negative impact of European consumers' dietary patterns on health and the environment, Nutri-Scores and Eco-Scores have been introduced as guidance for food choices. While these scores have potential to improve nutritional choices, their effect on the environmental impact of food choices is limited. This study explores the potential of digital functionalities to promote healthier and more environmentally friendly food choices. The results suggest that displaying combined Nutri- and Eco-Scores at the product level can improve nutritional quality, but not environmental impact. Therefore, a combined labelling system is recommended, but an enabling environment that considers both scores is important for a shift towards healthier and more environmentally friendly food choices.

Household acceptability of energy efficiency policies in the European Union: Policy characteristics trade-offs and the role of trust in government and environmental identity

Corinne Faure et al.

Summary: European households prefer effective policies, dislike personal costs, and prefer non-coercive policy instruments. Research shows that trust in government helps make coercive policies more acceptable, while higher environmental identity makes consumption limits more acceptable.

Environmental identity economics: an application to farmers' pro-environmental investment behaviour

Kahsay Haile Zemo et al.

Summary: This study proposes an environmental identity economics theory to improve understanding of pro-environmental behaviour, and tests its potential by analyzing farmers' decisions to invest in renewable energy production. The findings show that farmers with a strong environmental identity require less financial incentive to invest and lower compensation is sufficient to induce them to commit to more binding investment contracts. These results highlight the importance of differentiated designs of agri-environmental programmes and mechanisms that enhance farmers' environmental identity.

Green identity labeling, environmental information, and pro-environmental food choices

Wen Lin et al.

Summary: This study found that green identity labeling alone does not increase consumer valuation for sustainable labels, but environmental information intervention and its joint use with green identity labeling can enhance consumer valuation for existing pro-environmental foods.

The role of audit committees in social responsibility and environmental disclosures: evidence from Chinese energy sector

Junhui Wang et al.

Summary: This study finds that female representation on audit committees in China is positively associated with social responsibility and environmental disclosures, indicating the need for more female directors in Chinese audit committees. However, traditional measures of audit committee effectiveness such as independence and financial expertise do not consistently improve disclosures. Thus, there is room for Chinese audit committee members to strengthen female representation and extend their oversight role.

Survey Results on Using Nudges for Choice of Green-Energy Supplier

Danuta Milaszewicz

Summary: Individual behavioral changes play a crucial role in mitigating climate change, and insights from behavioral economics have proven to be helpful in this regard. This paper presents the results of a survey conducted in Poland, examining the reactions of respondents towards hypothetical nudges aimed at promoting the choice of a green energy supplier. The study aims to analyze the level of civic support for these behavioral intervention tools and the significance of various factors in their acceptance. The research findings highlight the relatively high support for green nudges in Poland, with age and political party preferences showing statistically significant differences in support levels.

Can behavioral interventions be too salient? Evidence from traffic safety messages

Jonathan D. Hall et al.

Summary: Although behavioral interventions are designed to seize attention, they may have costly consequences. A study on a safety campaign reveals that displaying traffic fatality counts during the campaign weeks leads to an increase in crashes statewide, with no sustained effects beyond the campaign weeks. This suggests that behavioral interventions, particularly negatively framed ones, can be too salient and can backfire with important considerations being crowded out.

Tax or green nudge? An experimental analysis of pesticide policies in Germany

Matthias Buchholz et al.

Summary: The study found that both a pesticide tax and a green nudge can reduce pesticide applications. The pesticide tax results in significant profit loss, leading farmers to adjust cropping and tillage strategies. Additionally, comparing farmers' decisions to a mathematical programming model showed that assuming profit maximisation may not accurately predict farmers' responses to the tax or the effectiveness of the nudge.
