Revealing the link between evolution of electron transfer capacity of humic acid and key enzyme activities during anaerobic digestion

Xiqing Wang et al.

Summary: The study found that the electron transfer capacity (ETC) of HAs increased during anaerobic digestion process at both mesophilic (671-1479 mu mol gHA-1) and thermophilic (774-1506 mu mol gHA-1) conditions. The ETC was positively correlated with bacterial community in hydrolytic and acidogenic phases, but negatively correlated with archaeal community in methanogenic phase. Furthermore, HAs formed under thermophilic conditions had a greater influence on key enzyme activities than those formed under mesophilic conditions.

Enhancing the phosphorus content of layered double hydroxide fertilizers by intercalating polymeric phosphate instead of orthophosphate: A feasibility study

Maarten Everaert et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of replacing orthophosphate (PO4) with polymeric-P (trimetaphosphate, P3O9) on the phosphorus content in layered double hydroxide (LDH). Adsorption capacity, phosphorus release, and phosphorus solubility were compared between the two. The findings showed that P3O9 had a higher adsorption capacity, but the theoretical phosphorus content was not achieved due to incomplete loading and depolymerization. Furthermore, P3O9-LDHs exhibited slower phosphorus release and lower soluble phosphorus content in soil compared to PO4-LDHs.

Understanding the mechanism of how anaerobic fermentation deteriorates sludge dewaterability

Qiang Liu et al.

Summary: Anaerobic fermentation increases proteins, polysaccharides, humic acids, and PO43- concentrations but decreases Ca2+ amount in the liquid phase, leading to increased viscosity and decreased zeta potential, affecting the flocculability of sludge. The increase of humic acids is identified as the major contributor to the deterioration of sludge dewatering. Additionally, anaerobic fermentation causes the transformation of microbes from Gram-negative to Gram-positive, enhancing the resistance of mechanical forces and negative charges on sludge flocs.

Anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and fish waste: Methane production performance and mechanism analysis

Yuqi Wu et al.

Summary: The study on anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge and fish waste showed that adding 1.5% and 3% of fish waste could enhance methane production, while adding more than 6% inhibited methane production severely. Microbial community analysis revealed dominance of hydrogenotrophic and methylotrophic methanogenesis pathways during anaerobic co-digestion.
