A modified nitrification inhibition test for high-salinity wastewater

Ravi Kumar Chhetri et al.

Summary: By culturing nitrifiers in wastewater with high salt content and adjusting the tested samples' salinity to the same level, the new method provides a more realistic nitrification inhibition test by eliminating the effect of salt. The standard deviation of the new method around the 50% inhibition level was below 3%, making it well suited for testing nitrification inhibition in salty water samples with similar or better repeatability and sensitivity compared to the ISO9509 method.

Eutrophication causes microbial community homogenization via modulating generalist species

Mengdie Geng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of eutrophication on microbial community structure in shallow lakes in the Yangtze-Huaihe River basin in China. The results showed that eutrophication led to the homogenization of bacterial and fungal communities in both water and sediments. Physicochemical factors such as water temperature, pH, and heavy metals were found to influence the community structure. Importantly, generalist species were found to play a dominant role in explaining the variations in beta diversity along the trophic gradient.

Insight into halotolerance of a robust heterotrophic nitrifying and aerobic denitrifying bacterium Halomonas salifodinae

Jie Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the ability of a halophilic bacterium to perform simultaneous nitrification and denitrification in hypersaline wastewater, as well as its halotolerant mechanism. The results show that the isolated strain can efficiently remove nitrogen at 15% salinity and exhibits high resistance to various salts and heavy metals. Metabolic analysis reveals that the bacterium accumulates compatible solutes to resist high osmotic pressure and bound water molecules, achieving efficient nitrification and denitrification processes.

Indole metabolism by phenol-stimulated activated sludges: Performance, microbial communities and network analysis

Jing Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of phenol on microbial communities in coking wastewater containing indole. The addition of phenol was found to enhance the removal efficiency of indole, and different microbial communities showed specific differences in the abundance of certain genera. Furthermore, phenol stimulation also increased positive interactions among bacteria.

Understanding the effect of residual aluminum salt coagulant on activated sludge in sequencing batch reactor: Performance response, activity restoration and microbial community evolution

Jing He et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of residual coagulant on the activated sludge system of wastewater treatment plants. The results showed that a low concentration of poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) enhanced the removal efficiencies of COD and TN, while a high concentration inhibited their removal. The residual aluminum salts also had a concentration effect on sludge activity. High-throughput sequencing revealed variations in microbial abundance at different PAC concentrations, with certain bacteria showing better adaptability to the high PAC concentration. However, the high PAC concentration resulted in the deterioration of denitrification. This study provides strategies for efficient decontamination and stable operation of the biological system in wastewater treatment plants.

Deep insights into the anaerobic co-digestion of waste activated sludge with concentrated leachate under different salinity stresses

Meng Gao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co-digestion of concentrated landfill leachate and waste activated sludge using lab-scale reactors. The results showed that salinity levels had a significant impact on co-digestion performance, with higher salinity leading to decreased organic removal ratio and biogas and methane yields. Microbial community and diversity were also affected by salinity, with decreased microbial cell activity and damaged sludge floccule structure. The study provides important theoretical guidance for anaerobic digestion under salinity stresses.

Enhancing robustness of activated sludge with Aspergillus tubingensis as a protective backbone structure under high-salinity stress

Yingyun Chen et al.

Summary: This study developed a salt-tolerant aerobic granular sludge (AT-AGS) using pelletized Aspergillus tubingensis (AT) as a protective backbone structure for activated sludge under high-salinity stress. The results showed that salt-domesticated AT-AGS had higher COD and NH4+-N removal efficiencies, stronger biomass retention capacity, and higher metabolic activity compared to salt-domesticated flocculent activated sludge (FAS). Additionally, high-throughput sequencing analysis revealed that AT contributed to maintaining microbial richness and diversity in the high-salt environment, making Marinobacterium the most predominant genus in salt-tolerant AT-AGS.

Effect of aerobic/anoxic duration on the performance, microbial activity and microbial community of sequencing batch biofilm reactor treating synthetic mariculture wastewater

Shuailing Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that the aerobic/anoxic duration has a significant impact on the performance, enzymatic activity, and microbial community of the sequencing batch biofilm reactor (SBBR) treating mariculture wastewater. Different aerobic/anoxic durations can lead to changes in microbial nitrogen removal rates and enzymatic activities, thereby affecting the effectiveness of wastewater treatment.
