Uncertainty quantification of granular computing-neural network model for prediction of pollutant longitudinal dispersion coefficient in aquatic streams

Behzad Ghiasi et al.

Summary: Discharge of pollution loads into natural water systems remains a global challenge that threatens water and food supply, as well as endangering ecosystem services. This study develops an artificial intelligence-based predictive model that provides robust estimation of the rate of longitudinal dispersion (D-x) in streams under high spatiotemporal variability, addressing the large uncertainty in existing estimation models.

A non-threshold model to estimate carcinogenic risk of nitrate-nitrite in drinking water

Roohollah Noori et al.

Summary: Understanding the levels of nitrate-nitrite (NO3--NO2-) in drinking water and their associated health risks is crucial for protecting public health. This study reveals a high carcinogenic risk of NO3--NO2- in Tehran's potable water, especially for children. Urgent action is recommended to reduce the permissible level of nitrate in drinking water to safeguard public health.

Gaussian process emulation of spatio-temporal outputs of a 2D inland flood model

James Donnelly et al.

Summary: The study examines the appropriateness and robustness of using Gaussian Process models to emulate flood inundation, with real-time predictions based on simulation output from LISFLOOD-FP. An efficient dimensionality reduction scheme is developed to handle high-dimensional output space, allowing for accurate reproduction of water depths and inundation extent with significant computational speedups compared to the original simulator.

An Efficient Data Driven-Based Model for Prediction of the Total Sediment Load in Rivers

Roohollah Noori et al.

Summary: This study develops a robust method using multiple linear regression (MLR) and support vector regression (SVR) models to predict the total sediment load (TSL) in rivers. Ten dimensionless parameters were identified as the key drivers of TSL, and were converted to uncorrelated principal components for the MLR and SVR models. The results suggest that the PCA-based SVR model with radial basis function kernel outperforms existing empirical formulas for TSL estimation, especially for cases with high sediment concentration.

Decline in nitrogen concentrations of eutrophic Lake Dianchi associated with policy interventions during 2002-2018*

Yong Liu et al.

Summary: China has made efforts to improve water quality since 2000, resulting in a decrease in N concentrations in Lake Dianchi from a peak in 2007-2010 to 1.2 mg L-1 in 2018. Reducing external discharge is a priority for historical lake water quality improvement, while enhancing internal N removal is crucial for future lake ecosystem restoration.

Globally consistent assessment of coastal eutrophication

Eligio de Raus Maure et al.

Summary: This study introduces the first global interactive assessment tool of coastal eutrophication potential based on Google Earth Engine, finding that approximately 1.15 million square kilometers of coastal waters globally have eutrophic potential. Areas with eutrophication potential, indicated by increasing trends in satellite-derived chlorophyll-a, are twice as large as those showing signs of recovery. The tool effectively identifies regions with severe symptoms of eutrophication, as well as areas with limited to no information on eutrophication.

Identifying major contributors to algal blooms in Lake Dianchi by analyzing river-lake water quality correlations in the watershed

Jing-Han Wang et al.

Summary: Globally intensified hazardous algal blooms pose threats to public health and ecosystems. River-lake water quality differences were studied from 2010 to 2015, showing that riverine pollutants, especially CODCr and nutrients, had significant impacts on lacustrine HABs. Water temperature and suspended solids were identified as positive correlation factors with HABs, while dissolved oxygen was a negative factor. Recommendations for lower nutrient limits in inflow rivers and Lake Dianchi were proposed to mitigate HABs in the lake.
