Sustainable Approach to Weed Management: The Role of Precision Weed Management

Antonio Monteiro et al.

Summary: The world's population growth has led to increased pressure on agricultural production, exacerbated by climate change, water scarcity, and reduced arable land. Weeds can negatively impact food production, but they also serve as indicators of biodiversity. Effective and sustainable weed management is necessary to balance resource competition without harming the agrarian ecosystem. Overreliance on mechanization and herbicides should be avoided, while addressing herbicide resistance. Advances in weed control technologies offer the potential for increased food production, reduced inputs, and minimized environmental damage, contributing to more sustainable agricultural systems.

Allelopathic Activity and Characterization of Allelopathic Substances from Elaeocarpus floribundus Blume Leaves for the Development of Bioherbicides

Kawsar Hossen et al.

Summary: To explore the allelopathic potential of Elaeocarpus floribundus, this study found that its extracts significantly suppressed the growth of cress and barnyard grass. Three active allelopathic substances were isolated and identified as (3R)-3-hydroxy-beta-ionone, cis-3-hydroxy-alpha-ionone, and loliolide. These substances exhibited strong phytotoxic effects, with (3R)-3-hydroxy-beta-ionone being the most potent.

Medicinal and aromatic plants as an emerging source of bioherbicides

Pooja Maurya et al.

Summary: Weeds have a significant impact on crop yield in tropical agriculture, but their importance is often underestimated. The continuous use of synthetic herbicides can have negative effects on human health and the environment. Natural products, such as essential oils and plant extracts, are being studied as alternative herbicides due to their environmentally friendly nature and low toxicity. However, there are still limitations in the research of these natural products.

Identification and Application of Bioactive Compounds from Garcinia xanthochymus Hook. for Weed Management

Md. Mahfuzur Rob et al.

Summary: The allelopathic potential of Garcinia xanthochymus extracts was evaluated against various test plant species, inhibiting their growth in a concentration- and species-specific manner. Two allelopathic compounds, methyl phloretate and vanillic acid, were identified in the extracts, with methyl phloretate being more effective in inhibiting cress and timothy seedlings growth compared to vanillic acid. These findings suggest the involvement of methyl phloretate and vanillic acid in the phytotoxicity of G. xanthochymus extracts.
