Identifying the critical watershed regions creating lake nutrient enrichment (SLRs) based on a watershed-lake integrated perspective - A case study of Chaohu Lake Basin, China

Chen Lin et al.

Summary: It is essential to identify critical watershed source regions for lake protection. Studies have mainly focused on assessing TN and TP loads, neglecting the impact of watersheds on lake nutrients. By analyzing watershed nutrient loss over the past decade, SLRs causing lake nutrient enrichment were identified, with findings showing increasing TN and TP outputs, higher TP and TN concentrations in the western lake, and SLRs located in the western Chaohu watershed.

Assessment of non-point source of pollution using chemical mass balance approach: a case study of River Alaknanda, a tributary of River Ganga, India

M. K. Sharma et al.

Summary: The meltwaters from the rivers originating from the Himalayan glaciers play a significant role in diluting the solute load from the Ganga plain catchments. Hydrochemical investigations revealed that the chemical composition of river water is influenced by weathering of rock forming minerals in the drainage basin and ion exchange processes. The assessment and management of non-point sources pollution require vast amount of data due to their prevalent nature in response to hydrological processes and land use patterns.

Comparative study of flash flood in ungauged watershed with special emphasizing on rough set theory for handling the missing hydrological values

Muhammad Waseem Boota et al.

Summary: This study successfully predicted flash floods in ungauged watersheds using an RST-based forecasting model and estimated peak discharge during a flood event in 2015. The reliability of the RST model was demonstrated, but the lack of flow data limited the reliability of the R.F-R.O model. It is suggested to enhance channelization and cross-drainage works to protect the catchment from floods and debris.

Contributions of climate change and human activities to changes in the virtual water content of major crops: An assessment for the Shijiazhuang Plain, northern China

Enze Zhang et al.

Summary: This study addresses the lack of knowledge in interpreting the contribution of climate change and human activities to the variation of virtual water content (VWC) by proposing a VWC contribution analysis framework. Human activities were found to play a dominant and essential role in shaping the evolution of VWC, with a relative contribution greater than 97% compared to less than 3% for climate change, as demonstrated in the Shijiazhuang Plain in northern China.

More efficient phosphorus use can avoid cropland expansion

Jose M. Mogollon et al.

Summary: Efficient and targeted use of phosphorus is crucial in avoiding environmental issues caused by population growth and increased food demand. Global projections indicate a significant amount of new arable land will be needed by 2050, but with proper phosphorus management, cropland expansion can be avoided while improving productivity levels.
