Effect of Rootstock on Citrus Fruit Quality: A Review

Julia Morales Alfaro et al.

Summary: Citrus rootstocks have a significant impact on fruit quality, including physico-chemical parameters, nutritional compounds, and physiological disorders. External factors such as the interaction between rootstock and scion, water uptake capacity of roots, and modification of photosynthetic rate affect fruit quality.

Life cycle assessment of the Argentine lemon and its derivatives in a circular economy context

Lucas M. Machin Ferrero et al.

Summary: The study conducted a Life Cycle Assessment of lemons and derivatives in Argentina, revealing the environmental implications of transitioning from traditional industries to biorefineries applying circular economy principles. The findings show that adding value to wastes and implementing circular economy strategies do not ensure a better environmental performance of the system, and using all biogas for electricity production is the most promising scenario with the least environmental impact.

Evaluating the environmental performance of orange production in Veracruz, Mexico: A life cycle assessment approach

Joel Bonales-Revuelta et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the environmental performance of orange production in Veracruz, Mexico's largest orange producer state, using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology. The results indicate that conventional orange production has a higher impact on greenhouse gas emissions, acidification potential, eutrophication potential, and human toxicity compared to organic production, mainly due to the use of fertilizers. The environmental impacts of organic orange production are mainly related to upstream processes. This study contributes to the literature on LCA for fruit products in developing countries and proposes the use of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) for result interpretation.

What drives market construction for fair trade, organic, and GlobalGAP certification in the global citrus value chain? Evidence at the importer level in the Netherlands and the United States

Anne Mook et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the factors that shape the construction of certification markets for citrus, focusing on different types of certification schemes including Fair Trade, Organic, and GlobalGAP certification. The results reveal that industry-sponsored business-to-business certification systems have outperformed consumer-facing label systems in competing across different schemes.
