Evaluating planning without plans: Principles, criteria and indicators for effective forest landscape approaches

Edward A. Morgan et al.

Summary: Protecting forests is crucial for addressing climate change and biodiversity crises. However, in developing countries, limited resources and capacity hinder effective forest landscape planning. Developing a robust evaluation framework can help improve planning processes and outcomes.

Stakeholder perspectives on the effectiveness of governance in red panda conservation programmes in Nepal: a comparative analysis

Anita Shrestha et al.

Summary: This study investigates the governance quality of existing forest management strategies for red panda protection in Nepal from the perspectives of multi-stakeholders. The findings show that while online survey participants generally consider the management strategies effective, this effectiveness is less pronounced for marginalized populations. Local communities, who heavily rely on forests, continue to face unequal resource distribution and benefit sharing. Therefore, there is a need to prioritize capacity building, income generation, and alternative livelihoods to strike a balance between conservation needs and basic needs of forest-dependent communities.

Comparing Community Needs and REDD+ Activities for Capacity Building and Forest Protection in the Equateur Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo

Edward A. Morgan et al.

Summary: This paper explores the alignment between capacity building activities within the DRC REDD+ strategy and the capacity needs identified by provincial government stakeholders and local communities in the Equateur province of the DRC. The research suggests that while many technical capacity needs can be addressed by the REDD+ strategy, there are systemic capacity needs that are unlikely to be addressed. Failure to address these needs risks undermining any implementation of REDD+.

The economic values of global forest ecosystem services: A meta-analysis

Fitalew Agimass Taye et al.

Summary: This study presents a meta-analysis of the economic values of global forest ecosystem services, revealing large variations in reported values and identifying different drivers influencing these values. The results emphasize the importance of valuing multiple ecosystem services together, rather than separately, as the latter approach may overlook the trade-offs inherent in the management of forests, particularly industrial plantation forests.

Progress on incorporating biodiversity monitoring in REDD plus through national forest inventories

Loic Gillerot et al.

Summary: The incorporation of biodiversity conservation priorities into REDD+ initiatives is well-documented as an opportunity and necessity. National forest inventories serve as essential tools for monitoring carbon stock changes and have the potential to include biodiversity indicators. However, the progress of countries in monitoring non-tree biodiversity varies, with a need for greater transparency and funding support.

Integrating forest management across the landscape: a three pillar framework

Edward A. Morgan et al.

Summary: Forests play a crucial role in global ecosystems, but face threats from competing land uses. Integrated landscape approaches aim to create sustainable forest land use through holistic resource management. This paper addresses the limited theoretical basis of landscape approaches by integrating key components such as ecosystem integrity, governance systems, and planning processes in forest landscapes.
