Significance of Mg-hardness and fluoride in drinking water on chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology in Monaragala, Sri Lanka

D. N. D. Liyanage et al.

Summary: The study conducted in the Monaragala district of Sri Lanka revealed a CKDu prevalence of about 6.7%. Analysis of groundwater samples showed significant differences in the concentrations of certain ions between CKDu-prevalent locations and control locations. Higher levels of alkali and alkaline earth cations, as well as fluoride, were found in the drinking water sources used by CKDu patients, potentially relating to the disease.

Relic surface water (clay-pore water) input triggers arsenic release into the shallow groundwater of Bengal aquifers

Pousali Pathak et al.

Summary: This article discusses the geogenic source of arsenic in groundwater and examines the seasonal variations in dissolved arsenic content and stable isotope ratios in groundwater, deep pond water, river water, and rainwater. The study finds a similarity in the isotopic composition between deep pond water and clay-pore water in shallow aquifers, which contributes to the seasonal release of arsenic into groundwater.

Evaluation of Performance of Existing RO Drinking Water Stations in the North Central Province, Sri Lanka

Suresh Indika et al.

Summary: The study found that RO drinking water stations established by community-based organizations in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka have high salt rejection rates and effectively remove hardness, alkalinity, and various ions. However, challenges such as low recovery rates, low fluoride levels in product water, and membrane fouling were identified, with lack of knowledge and training being major issues that could impact the lifespan of RO systems.

Hydrological seasonality largely contributes to riverine dissolved organic matter chemical composition: Insights from EEM-PARAFAC and optical indicators

Yongmei Ma et al.

Summary: The study investigated the variations of dissolved organic matter (DOM) compositions and sources in monsoonal rivers of China. It found that DOM in the wet season showed higher humification, aromaticity, and lignin substances, while the dry season had more biological and autochthonous sources. The research highlighted that hydrological seasonality and anthropogenic activities were key drivers for DOM variations, which will improve understanding of DOM's role in biogeochemical cycles and guide water quality protection in monsoonal rivers.

The Groundwater Geochemistry and the Human Health Risk Assessment of Drinking Water in an Area with a High Prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology (CKDu), Sri Lanka

W. S. M. Botheju et al.

Summary: This study found high concentrations of nephrotoxic heavy metals, fluoride, and water hardness in the groundwater of CKDu hotspot areas in Sri Lanka, posing potential threats to human health. Water quality index showed that 90% of samples in the CKDu prevalent area were classified as poor or very poor, while 73.33% of samples in the non-CKDu area were good or excellent for drinking purposes.

Groundwater as a potential cause of Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in Sri Lanka: a review

Sachithra Imbulana et al.

Summary: Despite extensive research efforts, the cause of Chronic Kidney Disease of unknown etiology (CKDu) in the rural dry zone of Sri Lanka, remains unidentified. Long-term exposure to nephrotoxic elements through drinking groundwater is widely suspected as a potential risk factor, but causality between impaired groundwater and the disease occurrence remains elusive. Further research is needed to clarify the role of groundwater in the onset of CKDu and address gaps in past studies.

Self-supplied drinking water in low- and middle-income countries in the Asia-Pacific

Tim Foster et al.

Summary: This study found that in low- and middle-income countries in the Asia-Pacific, over 760 million people relied on household self-supply for drinking water, with the number of users increasing by over 9 million each year. Household self-supply for drinking water is more common in rural areas compared to urban areas, with groundwater and rainwater collection being the primary sources in different regions.
