Optimization of Solidification and Stabilization Efficiency of Heavy Metal Contaminated Sediment Based on Response Surface Methodology

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Solidification and stabilization (S/S) by agents and stabilizers is an effective method for treating heavy metal-contaminated sediments. In this study, the synergistic effects of cement and stabilizer on the mechanical strength and leaching toxicity of contaminated sediments were investigated, and the S/S conditions were optimized. The results showed that the optimal curing conditions resulted in satisfactory compressive strength and improved stability of heavy metals.

Binding of Cu(II) and Zn(II) in Portland cement immobilization systems: Effect of C-A-S-H composition

Minghao Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the binding mechanisms of Cu2+ and Zn2+ with C-A-S-H using statistical EDS point analysis. Cu2+ primarily binds to C-A-S-H through two forms of binding, adsorbing onto the Al sites of substituted bridging silicate tetrahedra and onto deprotonated silanol group sites. Zn2+ mainly binds to the outer-product C-A-S-H, adsorbing onto positively charged sites on the C-A-S-H surface.

Chemical speciation of metals from marine sediments: Assessment of potential pollution risk while dredging, a case study in southern Sweden

Laura Ferrans et al.

Summary: This study investigates the speciation of metals in sediments from Malmfjarden bay, Sweden, and assesses the potential risk of metal pollution during dredging and using dredged sediments. The results show low pollution risk for Cr, Ni, and Fe during dredging activities, and medium risk for Pb and Zn. Overall, the investigated metals in Malmfjarden sediments are found to pose low risks of spreading during beneficial uses.

Copper transformation, speciation, and detoxification in anoxic and suboxic freshwater sediments

E. C. Cervi et al.

Summary: The addition of organic matter triggered a shift from suboxic to anoxic conditions in freshwater sediments, leading to a change in copper speciation as well. Organic matter complexed with copper to form complex structures, affecting the toxicity of copper in the sediments.

Sustainable ex-situ remediation of contaminated sediment: A review*

Yuying Zhang et al.

Summary: Routine waterway dredging activities generate large volumes of dredged sediment, posing a global challenge in remediating contaminated sediment. Sustainable ex-situ treatment technologies have been developed to transform sediment into construction materials. Proper selection and design of remediation technologies should consider factors such as cost, safety, environmental impacts, and social acceptability.

Calcium aluminate cement as an alternative to ordinary Portland cement for the remediation of heavy metals contaminated soil: mechanisms and performance

Loris Calgaro et al.

Summary: This study applied a solidification/stabilization process to contaminated soil, successfully obtaining reusable granular materials by using a combination of ordinary Portland cement and calcium aluminate cement to create various binders. Through experiments and analysis, the mechanisms involved in the retention of heavy metals were elucidated, and the wet conditioning process was found to improve the materials' performance.

Chromium contamination and effect on environmental health and its remediation: A sustainable approaches

Shiv Prasad et al.

Summary: Chromium is a critical trace element for human health, but contamination, particularly in the form of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], has increased in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to anthropogenic activities. Excessive exposure to chromium can lead to toxic health effects in humans and animals, while pollution negatively affects plant metabolic activities, reducing crop quality. Monitoring and implementing remediation technologies is essential to balance the environment and nature.
