Enhancing spatial coordination in payment for ecosystem services schemes with non-pecuniary preferences

Laure Kuhfuss et al.

Summary: This study conducted a laboratory experiment to test the effectiveness of the agglomeration bonus when non-pecuniary motives are explicitly incorporated. The results show that the agglomeration bonus can improve participation and spatial coordination when non-pecuniary motives are considered, but its performance is not enhanced by the nudge.

Practicing policy mobility of payment for ecosystem services through assemblage and performativity: Lessons from China's Xin'an River Basin Eco-compensation Pilot

Jichuan Sheng et al.

Summary: This paper examines the policy mobility of Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) in China's Xin'an River Basin Eco-compensation Pilot through the lens of assemblage and performativity. It argues that PES policy mobility is shaped by various assemblage practices and local institutional and political support, with performativity playing a role in justifying economic rationality and guiding PES technologies. The study also highlights power reconfigurations between governments and the market, showcasing China's adaptive ecosystem governance in practicing PES policy mobility.

Water quality and incentive coordination in water markets: The eastern route of China's South-North Water Transfer Project

Jichuan Sheng et al.

Summary: This study examines the importance of incentive-compatible coordination mechanisms in water markets through the case of the water market of the East Route of China's South-North Water Transfer Project (SNWTP-ER) and demonstrates how this mechanism can achieve the optimal state for both individuals and society simultaneously.

Measuring the incremental impact of Payments for Watershed Services on water quality in a transboundary river basin in China

Qingmin Zeng et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the incremental impact of the first transboundary Payments for Watershed Services (PWS) scheme on water quality in China using the synthetic control method (SCM). The results show an additional effect of the PWS scheme on water quality, and the applicability of SCM depends crucially on the availability of relevant water quality monitoring data.

The impact of environmental federalism: An analysis of watershed eco-compensation policy design in China

Jessica C. Teets et al.

Summary: The study found that the centralization of environmental governance in China in 2014, particularly the impact on the watershed eco-compensation model, led to an increase in ecosystem protection. However, the policy implementation faces challenges such as over-centralization of EWS program development, transboundary negotiation processes, and inadequate monitoring systems.

Incentive coordination for transboundary water pollution control: The case of the middle route of China's South-North water Transfer Project

Jichuan Sheng et al.

Summary: The study explores the issue of incentive coordination in transboundary water pollution control, comparing it with eco-compensation in terms of its impact on water quality improvement and benefit distribution. Findings indicate that incentive coordination has the same political and economic roots as neoliberal environmentality, and can effectively improve water pollution control by constructing an incentive structure.
