First principle study of the electronic and catalytic properties of palladium-silver (PdAg) alloys catalyst for direct liquid fuel cells

P. N. A. M. Othman et al.

Summary: The alcohol fuel cell is a promising technology that can improve energy conversion efficiency and reduce pollutant emissions. However, there are challenges in the catalysts used, and modification is required. Among various modification methods, producing bimetallic alloys has shown better performance compared to monometallic noble metal catalysts. This study investigated five catalyst models using density functional theory, focusing on their structural, electronic, and adsorption properties. The results showed that adding silver as a second metal promoted the adsorption capability of the alloy, but the catalytic activity depended heavily on the composition of the alloy.
