Resistance of the fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda, to transgenicBacillus thuringiensisCry1F corn in the Americas: lessons and implications for Bt corn IRM in China

Fangneng Huang

Summary: The fall armyworm, a major pest of Bt crops in North and South America, has recently invaded Africa and Asia, including China, posing a threat to food security. The resistance of S. frugiperda to Cry1F corn has been widely observed in Puerto Rico, Brazil, Argentina, and the United States due to various factors such as limited modes of action and cross-resistance among Bt proteins. Strategies for integrated resistance management in China include using high dose traits, monitoring resistance, employing gene pyramiding, and avoiding planting Bt corn in areas where armyworms overwinter. Lessons from global Bt crop use can be valuable for improving resistance management programs in the Americas and promoting sustainable Bt corn technology in China.

No positive cross-resistance to Cry1 and Cry2 proteins favors pyramiding strategy for management of Vip3Aa resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda

Ryan T. Gilreath et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the cross-resistance of Vip3Aa-resistant Spodoptera frugiperda to Bt cotton and corn plants, as well as purified Bt proteins. Results showed that resistance to Vip3Aa did not confer any positive cross-resistance to other Bt proteins in S. frugiperda. This indicates that pyramiding strategy may be an effective approach for managing resistance to Vip3Aa protein in S. frugiperda.

Case study on the first immigration of fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda invading into China

Sun Xiao-xu et al.

Summary: The study confirmed the first immigration of Fall Armyworm (FAW) into China, with the early immigrant population being of the corn strain and mainly colonizing corn in Pu'er, Dehong, and Baoshan areas in Yunnan province. Migration trajectory simulation suggested that the moths might have mainly come from the eastern area in the mid-latitude region of Myanmar.

Genetic basis and cross-resistance of Vip3Aa resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda (lepidoptera: Noctuidae) derived from Texas, USA

Fei Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, the genetic basis of Vip3Aa resistance in Spodoptera frugiperda collected from Texas was identified to be controlled by a single, functionally recessive and autosomal gene. Comparison with a known Vip3Aa resistant population from Louisiana showed differences in resistance mechanisms. Additionally, the Texas population's resistance to Vip3Aa did not cross-react with Cry1F and Cry2Ab2 proteins.

Managing Fall Armyworm in Africa: Can Bt Maize Sustainably Improve Control?

Johnnie Van den Berg et al.

Summary: The recent invasion of Africa by fall armyworm has raised concerns about food security, and genetically engineered maize could be a useful tool for controlling pests. However, practical resistance to Bt maize has been observed in the Americas. Stakeholders in Africa will make decisions about deploying Bt maize, and it is recommended to use non-Bt maize refuges to control fall armyworm.
