Plant-Based Bioinsecticides for Mosquito Control: Impact on Insecticide Resistance and Disease Transmission

Meryem S. Senguel Demirak et al.

Summary: Mosquito-borne diseases cause millions of deaths each year. The use of synthetic insecticides has been effective in protecting humans from mosquito bites, but it has also led to health problems, insecticide resistance in mosquitoes, and environmental damage. Therefore, there is a need for safer and more effective mosquito control strategies, and plant-based bioinsecticides are considered a promising alternative. This review discusses the current literature on synthetic insecticides, mosquito resistance, and the potential of plant-based compounds in mosquito control.

Cananga odorata (Magnoliales: Annonaceae) Essential Oil Produces Significant Avoidance Behavior in Mosquitoes

Chutipong Sukkanon et al.

Summary: The essential oil of Cananga odorata Hook. F &Tomson showed strong repellent effects on Culex quinquefasciatus Say and Anopheles minimus Theobald, while also exhibiting contact irritancy and noncontact repellency actions. Further research is needed to investigate the specific compounds responsible for these effects.

Toxicity, behavioural and biochemical effect of Piper betle L. essential oil and its constituents against housefly, Musca domestica L.

Kesavan Subaharan et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the components of Piper betle essential oil have insecticidal effects on houseflies, with eugenol showing higher ovicidal activity and fumigant toxicity. This suggests that they could be a viable alternative for managing housefly populations.

Review on plant terpenoid emissions worldwide and in China

Weizhen Yang et al.

Summary: Biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs), especially terpenoids, play a significant role in ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation in the atmosphere, as well as global climate change. Understanding their emission mechanisms and measurements is crucial for evaluating their impact on atmospheric chemistry and climate change. Further research is needed to quantify the effects of environmental factors on terpenoid emissions, especially in China where accurate local measurements are essential for improving emission inventories.
