The 21 May 2021 Mw 6.1 Yangbi Earthquake-A Unilateral Rupture Event with Conjugately Distributed Aftershocks

JunLei Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the source mechanism and fault geometry of the 6.1-magnitude earthquake in Yangbi, Yunnan, using seismic waveforms and Global Navigation Satellite System data. The results show that there were conjugately distributed aftershocks 10 km southeast of the mainshock's epicenter, and the rupture process of the mainshock exhibited sharp deceleration. Positive Coulomb stress was triggered by the largest foreshock on the mainshock fault plane. The changes in static coulomb stress due to the mainshock radiated beyond the bend zone of the Weixi-Qiaohou-Weishan fault.

Empirical nonergodic shaking scenarios based on spatial correlation models: An application to central Italy

Sara Sgobba et al.

Summary: This paper presents a new methodological framework for generating empirical ground shaking scenarios, which can be used to reconstruct past ground motion patterns and generate future shaking scenarios in regions with strong-motion datasets. The methodology combines a nonergodic ground motion model with spatial correlation models, and takes into account directivity effects. The approach is calibrated on a dense dataset for central Italy and can simulate acceleration response spectra at unsampled sites.
