Structure-guided discovery of antioxidant peptides bounded to the Keap1 receptor as hunter for potential dietary antioxidants

Jia-Yi Yin et al.

Summary: An antioxidant tripeptides dataset and QSAR models were established in this study, revealing structural factors and dominant amino acids influencing the activity of antioxidant tripeptides. Ten food-derived tripeptides with higher activity were selected for synthesis, showing guiding effects on selecting proteins with high antioxidant activity. The model performance was proven to be robust after validation.

Methylglyoxal Induces Inflammation, Metabolic Modulation and Oxidative Stress in Myoblast Cells

Sota Todoriki et al.

Summary: Uremic sarcopenia is a serious clinical problem associated with physical disability and increased morbidity and mortality. Methylglyoxal (MG), a uremic toxin, accumulates in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and is related to the pathology of uremic sarcopenia. The mechanisms of MG-induced muscle atrophy in myoblast cells involve metabolic flow change and mitochondrial injury.

The connection between the dynamic remodeling of the mitochondrial network and the regulation of muscle mass

Vaninad Romanello et al.

Summary: Maintaining the function of mitochondria in skeletal muscle requires dynamic coordination of processes controlling mitochondrial network quality, which in turn affects muscle mass and performance. Loss of muscle mass increases the risk of disease onset and premature death, with exercise being the best approach to improve mitochondrial health and slow atrophy in various diseases.

Mechanisms of muscle atrophy and hypertrophy: implications in health and disease

Roberta Sartori et al.

Summary: Skeletal muscle acts as a protein reservoir in the body and plays a key role in regulating glucose and lipid levels. The growth or loss of muscle mass can impact overall metabolism, movement, eating, and breathing. Various quality systems control muscle function, adapting cells to environmental and nutritional cues.

From mitochondria to sarcopenia: Role of inflammaging and RAGE-ligand axis implication

Frederic N. Daussin et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is characterized by muscle mass and function loss, with mitochondrial alterations considered a key contributor. The pro-inflammatory receptor RAGE is involved in inflammaging and may have a connection with mitochondria in controlling sarcopenia.

The KEAP1-NRF2 System in Healthy Aging and Longevity

Daisuke Matsumaru et al.

Summary: Aging is a complex process influenced by various environmental factors, with oxidative stress playing a significant role in accelerating aging. The KEAP1-NRF2 system serves as a critical defense mechanism against oxidative stress, contributing to the prevention and mitigation of physiological aging and aging-related diseases. Understanding and controlling stress-induced damage may offer insights into extending healthspan and treating aging-related conditions.

Mitochondria and lysosome-targetable fluorescent probes for hydrogen peroxide

Yongchun Wei et al.

Summary: Hydrogen peroxide, a key member of reactive oxygen species, regulates physiological processes like cell proliferation, differentiation, and migration. Abnormal production of H2O2 can lead to diseases. Various fluorescent probes for H2O2 detection at the subcellular level, including those targeting mitochondria and lysosomes, have been developed and utilized.
