Cosmological implications of axion-matter couplings

Daniel Green et al.

Summary: In this paper, the cosmological constraints on the couplings of axions and other pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone bosons to Standard Model fermions are revisited. The focus is on the couplings below the electroweak scale, and the calculation of the production rates is updated to eliminate unnecessary approximations. The study finds that the cosmological bounds on these interactions complement astrophysical constraints, such as those from supernova SN 1987A.

Nested sampling for physical scientists

Greg Ashton et al.

Summary: This Primer examines Skilling's nested sampling algorithm and its application in Bayesian inference and multidimensional integration. The principles of nested sampling are summarized and recent developments using efficient nested sampling algorithms in high dimensions are surveyed. Detailed examples from cosmology, gravitational-wave astronomy, and materials science are provided. Finally, the Primer includes recommendations for best practices and a discussion of potential limitations and optimizations of nested sampling.

Muonic boson limits: Supernova redux

Andrea Caputo et al.

Summary: This research focuses on deriving supernova bounds on muon-philic bosons, considering factors like scalar phi and pseudoscalar a, as well as the generic two-photon coupling implied by a muon triangle loop. The results show that SN arguments become interesting mainly for larger boson masses, and constraints are derived based on SN 1987A gamma rays and the diffuse cosmic gamma-ray background. The study also discusses the implications on boson emission in different scenarios like escaping freely from the SN core or being in the trapping regime.

Thermal WIMPs and the scale of new physics: global fits of Dirac dark matter effective field theories

Peter Athron et al.

Summary: In this study, a wide class of WIMP dark matter models were assessed in light of the latest experimental results using the global fitting framework GAMBIT. The global analysis of effective field theory operators revealed challenges in satisfying all constraints simultaneously while maintaining EFT validity at LHC energies. However, large regions of viable parameter space were found where the EFT is valid and the relic density can be reproduced, suggesting that WIMPs can still account for the DM of the universe while being consistent with the latest data.

Constraining the inflationary potential with spectral distortions

Nils Schoneberg et al.

Summary: This paper discusses how measuring spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background can tightly constrain different inflation models, showing the importance of the combination of SD experiments and CMB anisotropy experiments in improving constraint power. Through numerical simulations, it is found that SDs can significantly enhance constraint power and increase the figure of merit.

Axionlike Particles from Hypernovae

Andrea Caputo et al.

Summary: Very energetic subclasses of supernovae may host ultrastrong magnetic fields in their core, catalyzing the production of feebly interacting particles and changing predicted emission rates. Recent research suggests that magnetic conversions in rare conditions could significantly increase the emissivity of axionlike particles, potentially leading to the discovery of MeV ALPs in unexplored regions of parameter space.

Bayesian evidence for the tensor-to-scalar ratio r and neutrino masses mν: Effects of uniform versus logarithmic priors

L. T. Hergt et al.

Summary: The paper examines the impact of choosing uniform or logarithmic priors on Bayesian evidence and model comparisons in situations where data only provide a one-sided bound on a parameter. Using specific examples regarding the tensor-to-scalar ratio and individual neutrino mass, the study demonstrates the mathematical quantification of Occam's penalty through the Kullback-Leibler divergence. The results show invariance of Bayesian evidence when changing the prior bounds of constrained parameters, and highlight the different preferences of models depending on the choice of prior.

Global fits of axion-like particles to XENON1T and astrophysical data

Peter Athron et al.

Summary: The excess of electron recoil events observed in the XENON1T experiment has been proposed to potentially indicate axion-like particles (ALPs) originated from the Sun or dark matter halo, or due to trace amounts of tritium in the experiment. Combining XENON1T data with astrophysical probes supports the dark matter ALP hypothesis, despite the need for tuning unknown parameters. Bayesian analysis does not show strong preference for the ALP interpretation of the XENON1T excess over the background hypothesis, despite the tensions in the case of solar ALPs.
