Gravitational waves x HI intensity mapping: cosmological and astrophysical applications

Giulio Scelfo et al.

Summary: This work investigates the cross-correlation between resolved gravitational wave detections and HI signal from intensity mapping experiments. The results show that the GW redshift distribution can be calibrated accurately at low redshifts, constraints on dynamical dark energy parameters are competitive, and a relatively small abundance of primordial black holes can be detected.

Mapping the cosmic expansion history from LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA in synergy with DESI and SPHEREx

Cristina Cigarran Diaz et al.

Summary: This study explores the synergy between the LVK detectors and spectroscopic galaxy surveys such as DESI and SPHEREx to measure cosmological parameters related to the cosmic expansion history and GW bias parameters. By analyzing the 3D spatial cross-correlation between dark GW sources and spectroscopic galaxy samples, precise measurements of the Hubble constant and dark energy equation of state can be obtained. The combination of Euclid with DESI and SPHEREx shows potential for marginal gains in measuring cosmological parameters, particularly at high redshifts.

Probing gravity with the DES-CMASS sample and BOSS spectroscopy

S. Lee et al.

Summary: This paper demonstrates the feasibility of using the DES-CMASS sample (DMASS) as the equivalent of CMASS for a joint analysis of DES and BOSS in the framework of modified gravity. By combining the data vectors of DMASS galaxies' angular clustering, DES METACALIBRATION sources' cosmic shear, and cross-correlation of the two, along with RSD measurements from the CMASS sample and Planck data, we obtain constraints on modified gravity parameters mu(0) and Sigma(0). The constraints obtained with DMASS are tighter than those with other samples using the same external data sets, indicating the effectiveness of this approach in breaking the degeneracy between galaxy bias and other cosmological parameters.

HI constraints from the cross-correlation of eBOSS galaxies and Green Bank Telescope intensity maps

Laura Wolz et al.

Summary: This study presents a joint analysis of Neutral Hydrogen (HI) Intensity Mapping observations with three galaxy samples covering the redshift range 0.6 < z < 1.0. The HI data is processed by separating and removing foregrounds using FAsTI ICA. The cleaned HI data is then cross-correlated with galaxy samples to study the amplitude and scale dependence of the power spectrum. The results provide precise constraints on neutral hydrogen density fluctuations in an underexplored redshift range.

Gaussian Process Regression for foreground removal in H i Intensity Mapping experiments

Paula S. Soares et al.

Summary: This study applies Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) for foreground removal in single-dish, low redshift H i intensity mapping for the first time, and provides an open-source Python toolkit for this purpose. The results show that GPR can be used effectively as a foreground removal technique, outperforming PCA in recovering the H i power spectrum, particularly on small scales. GPR performs better in recovering the radial power spectrum and is an excellent option for foreground removal in single-dish, low-redshift H i intensity mapping.

Imprints of cosmological tensions in reconstructed gravity

Levon Pogosian et al.

Summary: This study explores modifications of the standard cold dark matter cosmological model and identifies the necessary features for alternative theories to alleviate tensions between cosmological datasets. The results provide important constraints on modified gravity models and suggest that late-time dynamical dark energy and modifications of gravity may not offer a solution to certain tensions.

Testing the general theory of relativity using gravitational wave propagation from dark standard sirens

Suvodip Mukherjee et al.

Summary: Alternative theories of gravity predict modifications in the propagation of gravitational waves, with the geometric distances accessible from baryon acoustic oscillation measurements providing a method to measure deviations from general theory of relativity via the GW sources. This multimessenger test combines electromagnetic and gravitational wave observations to achieve higher accuracy than possible from use of bright standard sirens.

Gravitational Wave mergers as tracers of Large Scale Structures

S. Libanore et al.

Summary: Clustering measurements of Gravitational Wave (GW) mergers in Luminosity Distance Space can be used as a powerful tool for Cosmology in the future. By considering tomographic measurements of the Angular Power Spectrum of mergers in different detector networks, Fisher forecasts for cosmological and merger bias parameters can be produced, showing significant improvements in more advanced scenarios. Regardless of the specific constraining power of different experiments, this type of analysis presents interesting insights into the physical nature and properties of GW mergers.

21-cm foregrounds and polarization leakage: cleaning and mitigation strategies

Steven Cunnington et al.

Summary: The success of high intensity mapping depends largely on effective control of foreground contamination. By combining simulated foreground data with cosmological Hi simulations, different foreground treatments were tested, revealing near equivalent results with blind removal techniques. Results show that polarized foreground residuals are generally subdominant on small scales, but can be case dependent on larger scales. Higher levels of Faraday rotation require more aggressive cleaning. Cross-correlations with optical galaxy surveys can help mitigate extreme levels of residual foregrounds, but optimal balance between overcleaning and undercleaning is crucial.

HI intensity mapping with MeerKAT: calibration pipeline for multidish autocorrelation observations

Jingying Wang et al.

Summary: Most purpose-built 21-cm intensity mapping experiments utilize interferometer arrays, but general-purpose dish arrays can also measure the cosmological 21-cm signal effectively. By calibrating autocorrelation data from MeerKAT dishes and recovering maps of celestial emission and point sources, the feasibility of using MeerKAT and the future SKA for HI intensity mapping is demonstrated. The results show good agreement with external data sets and indicate potential for imaging MeerKAT interferometric data.

Guadalupe Canas-Herrera et al.

Summary: The text discusses the importance of gravitational-wave cosmology and research methods, demonstrating how machine learning techniques can be used to reconstruct new physics and explore the relationship between the propagation law of gravitational waves and the bias of sources. Predictions are made based on a network of Einstein Telescopes and a high-redshift galaxy survey, with investigations into rescaling results for other instrumental configurations. Obtaining accurate and precise luminosity distance measurements is highlighted as crucial for maximizing constraining power.

Gravitational-wave cosmological distances in scalar-tensor theories of gravity

Gianmassimo Tasinato et al.

Summary: The propagation of high-frequency gravitational waves in scalar-tensor theories of gravity was analyzed to examine properties of cosmological distances inferred from GW measurements. The study found modifications in both the luminosity and angular distances for GW as compared to General Relativity, with implications for gravitational lensing and time-delays between lensed GW and photons in multimessenger events. The Etherington reciprocity law was proven valid for a perturbed universe within a scalar-tensor framework, showing that lensed GW and their lensed electromagnetic counterparts arrive simultaneously, in line with causality constraints.
