Polymers as advanced antibacterial and antibiofilm agents for direct and combination therapies

Zhangyong Si et al.

Summary: The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial drug resistance in pathogenic bacteria poses a critical threat to global health. Cationic polymers, which target bacterial membranes, are seen as the last frontier in antibacterial development due to their low propensity for resistance and rapid bactericidal effect. Advanced antimicrobial cationic polymers show promise for overcoming bacterial membrane-related resistance mechanisms and may be useful for future therapeutic applications.

Smart Multifunctional Polymer Systems as Alternatives or Supplements of Antibiotics To Overcome Bacterial Resistance

Dicky Pranantyo et al.

Summary: In recent years, infectious diseases have become a critical threat again due to antimicrobial resistance. Natural antimicrobial peptides and their mimics show potential for killing bacteria with low resistance, but they can also be toxic to host cells. Smart systems to target bacteria are needed to minimize resistance and make practical use of these antimicrobial agents.

Antibacterial activity of bioceramic coatings on Mg and its alloys created by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO): A review

Arash Fattah-alhosseini et al.

Summary: Mg and its alloys are suitable choices for implant materials due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility features. However, the high electrochemical activity of these materials results in fast degradation and severe corrosion. The use of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) surface modification technique can enhance the antibacterial activity of Mg and its alloys while maintaining their corrosion protection properties.

Antimicrobial Peptides and Macromolecules for Combating Microbial Infections: From Agents to Interfaces

Luofeng Yu et al.

Summary: Bacterial resistance caused by overuse of antibiotics and biofilm protection is a global health crisis. Cationic antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are considered as potential alternatives to antibiotics due to their potent bactericidal effects and lower likelihood of inducing resistance. This review systematically classifies the reported action modes of AMPs into 15 types and three categories and emphasizes their applications at the biointerface as contact-active surface coatings and wound dressings.

Monitoring the Release of Silver from a Supramolecular Fullerene C60-AgNO3 Nanomaterial

Jonathan P. Hill et al.

Summary: The release of silver from the supramolecular fullerene-silver(I) nitrate complex C-60 (AgNO3)(5) was investigated, with the continuous release of Ag+ cations observed when immersed in 2-propanol over time. Silver nanoparticles were concurrently deposited at the crystal-solution interface onto an insoluble C-60 crystalline framework. The released silver nanoparticles exhibited bactericidal activity, while C(60)(AgNO3)(5) crystals showed anti-proliferative properties in aqueous media.
