Summary: This study examines the ethical, privacy, and fairness risks posed by digitization, artificial intelligence, and service robots in service firms, and explores ways to mitigate these risks through corporate digital responsibility (CDR). The research highlights the importance of CDR in service contexts due to the extensive customer data involved and the omnipresence, opacity, and complexity of digital service technology. By synthesizing literature on ethics, privacy, and fairness using the CDR data and technology life-cycle perspective, the study provides a better understanding of the nature of these risks in the service industry. Additionally, the research analyzes the digital service ecosystem and the flows of money, service, data, insights, and technologies to gain insights into the origins of these risks and introduces the concept of CDR calculus to capture the trade-offs between good CDR practices and organizational objectives. The study concludes that regulation may be necessary when a firm's CDR calculus becomes overwhelmingly negative. Finally, the research proposes a set of strategies, tools, and practices for service firms to manage these trade-offs and cultivate a strong CDR culture.
