Resolvent-based modeling of turbulent jet noise

Ethan Pickering et al.

Summary: Resolvent analysis has been shown to be effective in modeling coherent structures in jets and reconstructing the most energetic regions of the acoustic field. By projecting LES realizations onto a limited set of resolvent modes, encouraging results were obtained.

Waves in screeching jets

Daniel Edgington-Mitchell et al.

Summary: The interaction between various wave-like structures in screeching jets has been studied using experimental measurements and linear stability theory. Three distinct wave-like structures have been identified, including the well-known Kelvin-Helmholtz mode and the recently discussed guided jet mode.

Optimal eddy viscosity for resolvent-based models of coherent structures in turbulent jets

Ethan Pickering et al.

Summary: Linear resolvent analysis of turbulent mean-flow fields can qualitatively capture characteristics of coherent structures in turbulent flows. By using a data-driven approach to optimize the eddy viscosity, the agreement between resolvent and SPOD modes can be substantially improved, reaching over 90% agreement at certain frequencies. A fixed model for eddy viscosity with a single constant can also provide substantial agreement between different modes in turbulent jets.

Efficient computation of global resolvent modes

Eduardo Martini et al.

Summary: Resolvent analysis of the linearized Navier-Stokes equations can provide insight into transitional and turbulent flows by identifying dominant coherent structures within the flow. This paper proposes two new matrix-free methods for computing resolvent modes, achieving significant speedup compared to previous methods by integrating linearized equations and adjoint systems in the time domain. The methods, one based on transient response analysis and another on steady-state response to periodic forcing, offer fine frequency discretization for leading modes and optimal/suboptimal modes for a discrete set of frequencies.

An azimuthal Fourier domain formulation of the Ffowcs Williams and Hawkings equation

Zhibo Chen et al.

Summary: The study presents a new formulation entirely in the azimuthal Fourier domain, obtained by manipulating the FW-H equation, to efficiently and naturally compute the acoustic field associated with resolvent modes of a Mach 1.5 jet.
