Predicting the packing parameter for lipids in monolayers with the use of molecular dynamics

Jan Kobierski et al.

Summary: Lipid molecules form the backbone of biological membranes and self-organize into various structures depending on the shape factor or critical packing parameter, CPP. The value of CPP predicts the type of self-assembled structure and affects molecular interactions, playing a significant role in physiological and pathological conditions. Using molecular dynamics, a method has been developed to successfully determine packing parameters for different membrane lipids and amphiphilic molecules.

Solubility of Hydrophobes into Macrocyclic Hosts

Yifeng Yao et al.

Summary: Using molecular dynamics simulations and the potential distribution theorem, the inclusion process of noble gases in cucurbit[5]uril, cucurbit[6]uril, and alpha-cyclodextrin was quantified. Results showed that both solute-solvent energy and entropy favored the inclusion, with energy being the dominant factor. The frequency of interior drying, related to the entropic contribution, varied between hosts and was controlled by the presence of lid water and host framework flexibility. Moreover, the hosts exhibited different types of absorption manners, including non-, single-, and double-free-energy barriers.

Aqueous phase behavior of the PEO-containing non-ionic surfactant C12E6: A molecular dynamics simulation study

Amali G. Guruge et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the spontaneous self-assembly of PEO non-ionic surfactants in water can be accurately modeled using molecular dynamics simulations, particularly with the 2016H66 force field. Although transitions to the hexagonal phase are slow, the 2016H66 force field better reproduces the experimental phase behavior across all regions of the C12E6/water phase diagram.
