Wettability Alteration during Low-Salinity Water Flooding

Ammar Al-Bayati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the direct effects of injecting low-salinity brine on outcrop Austin Chalk rock samples and found that the relative permeability curve shifted to the right and the irreducible water saturation and residual oil saturation decreased when using 0.2M NaCl. The study also found that the zeta potential and wettability of the carbonate changed with the dilution of the brine.

Pore network-scale visualization of the effect of brine composition on sweep efficiency and speed of oil recovery from carbonates using a photolithography-based calcite microfluidic model

M. Mohammadi et al.

Summary: The research found that the chemical composition of brine impacts both the ultimate oil recovery and its speed. The highest and fastest oil recovery was obtained with diluted seawater and seawater augmented with nanoparticles. In addition, ex-situ contact angle results can predict the performance of each brine at the pore network-scale.

The non-linear effect of oil polarity on the efficiency of low salinity waterflooding: A pore-level investigation

M. Golmohammadi et al.

Summary: Oil polarity is an important property that affects the efficiency of low salinity waterflooding. The concentration of acidic polar oil constituents and the type of non-polar fractions can change the trapped oil saturation during waterflooding. Increasing the concentration of polar components reduces the interfacial tension and improves the sweep efficiency of waterflooding. The oil recovery factor is logarithmically correlated with oil polarity.

New type of pore-snap-off and displacement correlations in imbibition

Kamaljit Singh et al.

Summary: This study investigates the pore-scale processes in natural porous media using time-resolved 3D X-ray imaging. A new type of snap-off in pores is discovered, trapping a small portion of the non-wetting phase in pore corners. The findings provide correlations for displacement events based on pore-throat geometry.

Adsorption of Polar Species at Crude Oil-Water Interfaces: the Chemoelastic Behavior

Ahmed M. Saad et al.

Summary: We investigate the formation and properties of crude oil/water interfacial films. The time evolution of interfacial tension suggests competition between different populations of surface-active molecules. The interface rheology is dominated by elasticity, and the chemical composition of interfacial films is affected by the composition of the aqueous phase. Furthermore, our solution exchange experiments reveal a change in film composition, indicating a potentially important crude oil recovery mechanism.

Non-monotonic wettability effects on displacement in heterogeneous porous media

Wenhai Lei et al.

Summary: This study reports the non-monotonic wettability effects on displacement efficiency in porous structures. Experiments show that there exists a critical wettability in porous matrix structures with preferential flow pathways to achieve the highest displacement efficiency. The distribution of phases in porous structures also varies under different wettability conditions. Pore-scale mechanisms are identified to explain the formation of this non-monotonic wettability rule.

Dynamics of electrostatic interaction and electrodiffusion in a charged thin film with nanoscale physicochemical heterogeneity: Implications for low-salinity waterflooding

A. Pourakaberian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of nanoscale physicochemical heterogeneities at the rock/brine interface on low-salinity waterflooding. The results show that surface roughness and surface charge heterogeneity have significant effects on electrodiffusion and electrostatic disjoining pressure. Additionally, the effect of surface charge heterogeneity is more pronounced under low salinity conditions, while the effect of surface roughness is more pronounced under high salinity conditions.

Investigating low salinity waterflooding via glass micromodels with triangular pore-throat architectures

Yafei Liu et al.

Summary: Glass micromodels with arbitrary triangular cross sections were successfully fabricated using femtosecond pulsed laser direct writing, allowing for more accurate recapitulation of geological porous media. The study investigated the impact of different brine solutions on displacement behavior during waterflooding to simulate the low salinity effect. Results showed that produced emulsions were prone to coalesce in the presence of lower salinity brine.

Mechanistic Investigation of the Synergy of a Wide Range of Salinities and Ionic Liquids for Enhanced Oil Recovery: Fluid-Fluid Interactions

Ali Esfandiarian et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the performance of three imidazolium-based ionic liquids in reducing the interfacial tension between crude oil and IL solutions under a wide range of salinities. It was found that longer alkyl chain ILs accumulated more at the solution interface under high ionic strength conditions, leading to a greater reduction in IFT. Additionally, under low salinity conditions, longer alkyl chain IL exhibited a lower IFT value in diluted seawater compared to diluted formation water.

Functional compounds of crude oil during low salinity water injection

Mohammad Fattahi Mehraban et al.

Summary: This study identified the functional compounds in crude oil that contribute to the low salinity water effect during water injection. Acidic compounds with aliphatic nature and asphaltene molecules were found to promote the formation of water-in-oil microdispersion at the interface, crucial for designing waterflood operations in oil reservoirs.

Pore scale visualization of fluid-fluid and rock-fluid interactions during low-salinity waterflooding in carbonate and sandstone representing micromodels

Seyed Emad Siadatifar et al.

Summary: The study found that Low Salinity Waterflooding has varying effectiveness on different rock types in an oil field. LSWF causes diminutive saturation redistribution under water-wet conditions, while it is highly effective under oil-wet conditions. Measured IFT and contact angles cannot explain the observed LSE, and the formation of visco-elastic interface may be the dominating mechanism in oil-wet systems.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of interface properties of sandstone/brine and thermodynamic equilibrium of sandstone minerals on wettability alteration during low-salinity water flooding. By using a triple-layer surface complexation model and experimental data verification, it was found that consideration of thermodynamic equilibrium significantly increased the surface potential, resulting in a stronger repulsive force and a more water-wet condition.
