Corrosion as the origin of limited lifetime of vanadium oxide-based aqueous zinc ion batteries

Yangmoon Kim et al.

Summary: Aqueous zinc ion batteries are gaining popularity for large-scale energy storage due to their safety, cost, and scalability. However, the limited cyclability and poor calendar life of vanadium oxide-based batteries hinder their practical adoption. This study reveals that the formation of an inactive zinc pyrovanadate phase on the cathode surface is the main cause of limited sustainability and is correlated with the corrosion of the zinc metal anode. By controlling the pH and using an amalgamated zinc anode, the cyclability and lifetime of the batteries can be significantly improved.

Interlayer Engineering of Preintercalated Layered Oxides as Cathode for Emerging Multivalent Metal-ion Batteries: Zinc and Beyond

Xun Zhao et al.

Summary: Typical layered structures with large capacity, such as alpha-, delta-V2O5, delta-MnO2, and alpha-MoO3, have poor electrical conductivity and suffer from severe structural deterioration and sluggish diffusion kinetics during charging/discharging. Interlayer engineering of preintercalation strategies has offered effective solutions to stabilize these structures. Various substances like water molecules, alkali cations, transition metal cations, and organic molecules have been proven to enhance diffusion kinetics and stability, especially in emerging multivalent metal-ion batteries like rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries. This review clarifies the crystal structures, preparation methods, characterization techniques, mechanistic insights, and applications of preintercalated layered oxides in multivalent metal-ion batteries.
