Nanonewton scale adhesion force measurements on biotinylated microbeads with a robotic micropipette

Rita Ungai-Salanki et al.

Summary: This research investigated the physical background of biomolecular adhesion force through experiments and simulations, taking into account the impact of targeting offset on the results. The findings revealed that a higher targeting offset led to an increase in lifting force, while increasing flow rate actually decreased the lifting force. After reaching the maximum lifting force, further increasing the flow rate did not enhance the micropipette's manipulation force on the microbeads.

How Droplets Move on Surfaces with Directional Chemical Heterogeneities

David Feldmann et al.

Summary: The adhesion of droplets to surfaces is highly sensitive to the direction of chemical heterogeneities, as shown by bending beam and droplet roll-off experiments. The shape of the fluid contact line on the microscale elucidates the origin of this direction-dependent adhesion. These findings improve the understanding of droplet adhesion to surfaces with chemical heterogeneities and directional transport phenomena.

Force-Based Wetting Characterization of Stochastic Superhydrophobic Coatings at Nanonewton Sensitivity

Matti J. Hokkanen et al.

Summary: Superhydrophobic coatings with unique properties such as self-cleaning and staying dry have recently emerged in industrial and consumer markets. The stochastic nature of coating components can affect the uniformity of water repellency, and traditional contact angle goniometry may not provide accurate quantification of wetting properties. The study demonstrates that highly sensitive force-based methods can offer advantages in quantifying microscale heterogeneity in superhydrophobic coatings.
