Arginine-based surfactants alter the rheological and in-plane structural of stratum corneum model membranes

Melisa Hermet et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of two arginine-based amphiphiles as skin permeation enhancers by studying their interaction with stratum corneum (SC) model lipid membranes. The arginine-based amphiphiles were able to be incorporated into the SC membrane, altering its rheological and structural properties. They also affected the lateral structure of heterogeneous SC membranes at the nanoscale. The results encourage further exploration of these amphiphiles as skin permeation enhancers.

Stratum corneum as polymer sheet: concept and cornification processes

Teruasa Murata et al.

Summary: The skin barrier protects the body from external insults and water loss through the stratum corneum, which is composed of dead keratinocytes, lipids, and supporting cell bodies. The structure of the stratum corneum is a lipid-filled polymer sheet of corneocytes, providing flexibility and robustness. The formation of the stratum corneum is regulated by cytoplasmic calcium ion and pH.

Interactions between curcumin and cell membrane models by Langmuir monolayers

Maria Pedrosa et al.

Summary: This study investigates the interactions between curcumin, a bioactive natural compound with anti-cancer properties, and both healthy and cancerous cell membrane models. The results show that curcumin has a destabilizing effect on the cancerous cell membrane model, while enhancing cohesion in the healthy membrane model. These findings are valuable for improving the selectivity of drugs and avoiding adverse side effects of current anticancer therapies.

Summary: CB2 receptor is a promising target for treating neuroinflammation and other diseases, but the lack of understanding of its complex signaling complicates therapeutic exploitation. A study demonstrates how the CB2 agonist HU308 affects cytosolic Ca2+ levels in cells and tissues, and shows the utility of chemical photoswitches for real-time control and monitoring of CB2 signaling.

Analysis of environmental nanoplastics: Progress and challenges

Huiwen Cai et al.

Summary: Nanoplastics analysis lacks standardized and reliable methodologies, with challenges in separating and quantifying nanoplastics from real environmental samples. Raman spectroscopy and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry are popular analytical methods, but current methods face issues such as time-consuming processes, particle size detection limits, and lack of chemical confirmation of polymer types in quantification.

Molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate translocation and permeation of active from lipid nanoparticle to skin: complemented by experiments

Krishna M. Gupta et al.

Summary: The study investigates the mechanism of active translocation and permeation through the stratum corneum via molecular dynamics simulations and experimental studies. It shows that the active ingredient first adsorbs onto the skin surface, then penetrates slowly into the deeper layers of the skin.

Revisiting the cellular toxicity of benzo[a]pyrene from the view of nanoclusters: size- and nanoplastic adsorption-dependent bioavailability

Yunxia Ji et al.

Summary: Benzo[a]pyrene (Bap) exists in water as self-aggregated nanoclusters rather than dissolved molecules, with different sizes showing varied cytotoxicity. Polystyrene (PS) nanoparticles can adsorb Bap nanoclusters and enter cells, altering the cytotoxicity distinction of Bap. Study reveals the intracellular fate of nanoparticles, subcellular organelle damages, and the mitochondria-involved apoptosis pathway induced by the PS@Bap complex.
