Heavy metal-induced stress in eukaryotic algae-mechanisms of heavy metal toxicity and tolerance with particular emphasis on oxidative stress in exposed cells and the role of antioxidant response

Beatrycze Nowicka

Summary: This review summarizes the knowledge of heavy metal toxicity, oxidative stress, and antioxidant response in eukaryotic algae. The types of ROS and their damage to cellular components are described, followed by detailed characterization of heavy metals, including their properties, sources of contamination, toxicity mechanisms, and stress symptoms. The review also covers low-molecular-weight antioxidants and ROS-detoxifying enzymes, their properties, cellular localization, and their occurrence in algae belonging to different clades. Additionally, other mechanisms providing tolerance to metal ions are briefly outlined at the end.

Characterization and Release Mechanisms of Aerogel-Encapsulated Biocide Crystals for Low-Loading and High-Utilization Antifouling Coatings

Tenna Frydenberg et al.

Summary: In this study, silica aerogel-encapsulated biocide crystals were used to enhance the efficiency of antifouling coatings. The encapsulated crystals were characterized and it was found that the loading of biocide affected the particle size, pore volume, and specific surface area of the aerogels. Furthermore, the hydrophobic encapsulation material contributed to a controlled release of the active biocide.
