Barriers to institutional social sustainability

Walter Leal Filho et al.

Summary: Social sustainability is a field that focuses on social aspects such as equity, ethics, health, gender balance, and empowerment within the broader context of sustainability. While the concept is well-established and considered worth pursuing, there are barriers that hinder its wide dissemination. This study investigates and describes barriers associated with social sustainability implementation through a bibliometric analysis of literature on social sustainability in institutions, particularly with a focus on companies. The results highlight the importance of sustainability reporting, environmental disclosure, and financial performance in achieving social sustainability, while also indicating solutions for overcoming barriers, such as strengthening communication transparency and trust, promoting awareness, and utilizing technology to document and promote social sustainability.

The Role of Institutional Uncertainty for Social Sustainability of Companies and Supply Chains

Nikolas K. Kelling et al.

Summary: Global sourcing mainly comes from emerging markets and developing economies, where sustainability effects in supply chains can be optimized through understanding sourcing contexts. The case study of South Africa's mining sector reveals that social sustainability is influenced by the Social and Labour Plan institution, but faces challenges due to weakening factors causing institutional uncertainty. While state actors and mining companies drive this uncertainty, non-state actors counterbalance it and push towards mainstreaming sustainability practices. This study contributes to business ethics by exploring institutional uncertainty and actor dynamics in promoting sustainability in EMDEs.
