Spatiotemporal patterns and driving mechanism of carbon emissions in China's urban residential building sector

Huadun Chen et al.

Summary: This study innovatively explores the spatiotemporal patterns and driving mechanism of urban residential building sector carbon emissions (URBCE) in 30 provinces of China from 2000 to 2019. The results show that the majority of regions have experienced significant growth in URBCE, leading to a widening regional gap. The spatial pattern of URBCE is stable, with high values in the Northeast and North China, and low values in the Southwest. Factors such as urban residential building floor space per capita, population, and urbanization are promoting URBCE, while carbon intensity and energy intensity are increasingly inhibiting it. This study provides policymakers with a better understanding of URBCE and helps them develop regionally-specific emission reduction strategies. Additionally, it offers a fresh perspective on researching spatiotemporal disparities of carbon emissions in other sectors and nations, and has international significance.

Investigating the spatio-temporal influences of urbanization and other socioeconomic factors on city-level industrial NOx emissions: A case study in China

Ying Xu et al.

Summary: Cities play a crucial role in controlling industrial nitrogen oxides (NOx). This research evaluates the impact of urbanization level on industrial NOx emissions in different cities in China from 2017 to 2019. The findings show that urbanization level has a significant spatiotemporal heterogeneous effect on industrial NOx emissions, and other socioeconomic factors such as industrial electricity consumption, the share of secondary industry, population density, and research and development (R&D) expenditures also influence industrial NOx emissions.

Carbon emissions in China's urban residential building sector through 2060: A dynamic scenario simulation

Tengfei Huo et al.

Summary: This study establishes an integrated dynamic emission assessment model to explore the evolutionary trajectories of carbon emissions in China's urban residential building sector. The results show that under a carbon-neutral scenario, the peak of carbon emissions will occur in 2025 and decline thereafter. This study provides valuable insights for policy-making and evaluating emission paths in other countries and regions.

Coupling coordination between new urbanisation and carbon emissions in China

Jikun Jiang et al.

Summary: This study uses a coupling coordination degree model and other methods to examine the relationship between new urbanization and carbon emissions in China, and predicts the future trend of coordination degree. The results show that the level of new urbanization continues to rise with regional differences, while the carbon emissions subsystem fluctuates slightly with variations between northern and southern regions. The coupling coordination degree continuously improves during the study period and displays significant spatial correlation characteristics. Finally, policy suggestions for improving China's new urbanization and carbon emissions are proposed.

The spatial spillover effect of China?s carbon emissions trading policy on industrial carbon intensity: Evidence from a spatial difference-in-difference method

Shufen Dai et al.

Summary: The study found that differentiated carbon emissions trading policies can have negative spatial spillover effects on industrial carbon intensity reduction in surrounding areas, with technological progress playing a mediating role. Therefore, it is recommended to establish a unified carbon emissions trading system and upgrade low-carbon technologies as soon as possible.

China's commercial building carbon emissions toward 2060: An integrated dynamic emission assessment model

Tengfei Huo et al.

Summary: Carbon mitigation in the commercial building sector is crucial for achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality. However, there is limited scientific research on the long-term evolutionary trajectories and peak path in this sector. This study develops an integrated dynamic emission assessment model and uses scenario analysis to model the dynamic evolution of Chinese commercial building carbon emissions until 2060. The results indicate that cooling and lighting are the main contributors to carbon emissions growth, with varying carbon abatement potentials across climate zones. Promoting technological progress, increasing clean energy use, and raising low-carbon awareness are identified as major strategies for early carbon peaking and carbon neutrality.

Critical factors influencing carbon emissions of prefabricated building supply chains in China

Qiang Du et al.

Summary: The study found that technical factors have the strongest impact on reducing carbon emissions in prefabricated building supply chains, while supply chain coordination factors have the weakest impact. Market factors have a significant indirect influence. It is suggested to enhance the level of low-carbon design and companies' low-carbon awareness to reduce carbon emissions.

Will the urbanization process influence the peak of carbon emissions in the building sector? A dynamic scenario simulation

Tengfei Huo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of urbanization on China's carbon emissions from buildings through a comprehensive framework and dynamic simulation model. It predicts the peak emissions and trajectories of different building sectors, and finds that rural-urban migration plays a significant role in influencing the peaking time and emission peaks. This research provides valuable insights for the government in formulating effective strategies to achieve carbon peaking and neutrality goals.

The Impact of New Urbanization Policy on In Situ Urbanization-Policy Test Based on Difference-in-Differences Model

Jing Peng et al.

Summary: Compared to traditional urbanization, new urbanization in China aligns more closely with the country's national conditions and goals of sustainable development. The establishment of national new urbanization pilot areas plays a significant role in promoting in situ urbanization. Central cities in the Yangtze River Economic Belt have seen a substantial policy impact from the establishment of new urbanization pilot areas due to their advantages in transportation, resources, industry, and labor.
