Fallen leaves are superior to tree pruning as bulking agents in aerobic composting disposing kitchen waste

Meng Li et al.

Summary: This study compared the performance of fallen leaves and tree pruning as bulking agents in aerobic composting of kitchen waste. Results showed that fallen leaves outperformed tree pruning in terms of degradation efficiency, humification, temperature control, and gas emission. Bacterial community played a critical role in driving these results. Fallen leaves have great potential for efficient kitchen waste disposal.

Ultraviolet-visible and fluorescence spectra indicate the binding and transformation properties of hexavalent chromium in DOM solution

Situ Mu et al.

Summary: This study utilized spectroscopy to investigate the interaction between DOM and Cr(VI), revealing uneven participation of different functional groups in the complexation of Cr and the impact of interaction on solution properties. Analysis showed aromatic amino acids substances were more sensitive in binding onto Cr compared to fulvic-like and humic-like fractions, developing mechanisms for Cr(VI) retention. The goodness of fit of specific fluorescence intensities (SFI) was found to be better than that of the absorbance ratio (SR) at low Cr concentrations, but the opposite at high concentrations.

Reductive transformation of hexavalent chromium by ferrous ions in a frozen environment: Mechanism, kinetics, and environmental implications

Quoc Anh Nguyen et al.

Summary: The reductive transformation of Cr6+ by Fe2+ in ice is significantly faster compared to in water, with the accumulation of Cr6+, Fe2+, and protons in grain boundaries during freezing being the key factor. The proposed mechanism of redox reaction between Cr6+ and Fe2+ in ice can contribute to the natural conversion of Cr6+ in cold regions, and the Fe2+/freezing process shows potential for the treatment of Cr6+-contaminated wastewater.

Photochemical characterization of paddy water during rice cultivation: Formation of reactive intermediates for As(III) oxidation

Yu Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the photochemical processes in paddy water, identifying DOM-D-3*, O-1(2), and OH· as the main reactive intermediates with quantified quantum yields and steady-state concentrations. The findings demonstrated that DOM properties and nitrite concentration were key factors influencing RIs generation, and RIs significantly enhanced arsenite oxidation in paddy water. The study provides new insights into arsenite abiotic transformation pathways in paddy soil and water.

Chromium contamination and effect on environmental health and its remediation: A sustainable approaches

Shiv Prasad et al.

Summary: Chromium is a critical trace element for human health, but contamination, particularly in the form of hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)], has increased in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems due to anthropogenic activities. Excessive exposure to chromium can lead to toxic health effects in humans and animals, while pollution negatively affects plant metabolic activities, reducing crop quality. Monitoring and implementing remediation technologies is essential to balance the environment and nature.

Enabling simultaneous redox transformation of toxic chromium(VI) and arsenic(III) in aqueous media-A review

Yu Fu et al.

Summary: The simultaneous conversion of As(III) and Cr(VI) to their less toxic forms is beneficial for the environment and cost-effective. The mechanisms for the oxidation of As(III) and reduction of Cr(VI) through different processes have been explored. Acidity has a positive effect on co-conversion, while the mediated electron transfer process is not significantly affected by dissolved oxygen. Organic compounds may influence the conversion process.

Nutrient-assisted phytoremediation of wood preservative-contaminated technosols with co-planting of Salix interior and Festuca arundinacea

Sara Yavari et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fertilizer application on the remediation potential of co-plantings of Salix interior Rowlee and Festuca arundinacea Schreb. in wood preservative-contaminated soil. The results showed that a 1:1 nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio treatment yielded the best results in terms of metal(loid) uptake and contaminant and nutrient leaching, with increased arsenic and copper uptake in the plant roots. High arsenic and copper amounts were found in both Salix and Festuca in specific nitrogen-to-phosphorus ratio treatments.
