Activation of peroxymonosulfate by single-atom Fe-g-C3N4 catalysts for high efficiency degradation of tetracycline via nonradical pathways: Role of high-valent iron-oxo species and Fe-Nx sites

Xiaoming Peng et al.

Summary: A Fenton-like catalyst was prepared using isolated Fe single-atom and Fe clusters anchored onto a g-C3N4 framework for the heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade tetracycline (TC). The single Fe atoms served as active sites with optimal binding energy for PMS activation, leading to the production of high-valent iron-oxo species and single oxygen-dominated nonradical processes causing TC degradation. This study demonstrates the superior catalytic activity of single Fe atoms compared to Fe clusters in the activation of PMS for TC degradation.

Defect modulation of MOF-derived ZnFe2O4/CNTs microcages for persulfate activation: Enhanced nonradical catalytic oxidation

Huachun Lan et al.

Summary: There has been increasing interest in combining porous metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with conductive carbonaceous materials to enhance catalytic activity. In this study, a simple strategy was developed to synthesize a highly efficient and recyclable heterogeneous catalyst through the pyrolysis of MOFs as sacrificial templates. The introduction of defective sites in the carbon nanotubes (CNTs) precursor significantly improved the charge transfer capability of the composite microcages and the coordination environment of Fe centers. With the assistance of persulfate oxidants, the modulated defects in ZnFe2O4/CNTs-Ar exhibited a 17.5-fold higher reaction rate for Bisphenol A degradation compared to blank ZnFe(2)O(4) microcages. Experimental characterizations indicated that the defective CNTs facilitated the electron transfer from BPA molecules to persulfate, triggering the direct decomposition of pollutants through a non-radical oxidation pathway. This research provides a new strategy for developing high-performance MOFs-derived catalysts for wastewater treatment.
