Synthesis, properties, and applications of an anionic-nonionic Gemini surfactant for highly efficient remediation of perchloroethylene-contaminated aquifers

Summary: In this study, a novel and green Gemini surfactant, SNE(10)SID, was synthesized for the remediation of dense non-aqueous phase liquid-contaminated groundwater. The surfactant exhibited excellent activity under low temperature and high salt conditions, and showed a low adsorption loss. It also demonstrated a significantly higher PCE desorption ability compared to other monomeric surfactants. The total PCE removal rate reached 87.5% after 10 pore volumes of flushing.

Summary: The limited water solubility of ionic surfactants at lower temperatures can be overcome by incorporating them into mixed micelles with another surfactant that is soluble at lower temperatures. By utilizing molecular thermodynamics equations, phase diagrams were established for binary surfactant mixtures, validating the general theoretical model.

Surfactant-enhanced remediation of oil-contaminated soil and groundwater: A review

Summary: Oil leakage during extraction, processing, transportation, and storage can seriously damage the soil and groundwater environment. Surfactants play a crucial role in enhancing the remediation of oil-contaminated sites by reducing surface tension, improving contact efficiency of contaminants, and suppressing tailing and rebound effects. Different types of surfactants offer diverse options for remediation, with biosurfactants and mixed surfactants being particularly effective and worth attention. Adsorption of surfactants on soils and aquifer sediments should be minimized to avoid decreased remediation efficiency and potential secondary pollution.
