The nexus between water, exergy, and economics in an optimal integrated desalination system with two configurations and four operation modes

Amir Saman Tayerani Charmchi et al.

Summary: A novel hybrid multi-modal cooling-heating-desalination system is proposed with a parallel-feed multi-effect evaporative desalination unit and a series double-effect water-lithium bromide absorption heat pump. Through multi-objective optimization, optimal configurations for both a single compressor and a double compressor are determined, achieving the goals of saving energy, improving water efficiency, and reducing costs.

A new utility-free circular integration approach for optimal multigeneration from biowaste streams

Pouya Ifaei et al.

Summary: Traditional process integration approaches contribute to climate change by emitting greenhouse gases and wasting water resources. This study proposes a circular integration approach to optimize energy recovery in a self-sustainable multigeneration system. By splitting the wastewater into carbon-rich and water-rich streams, the system is able to produce various types of energy without external utilities. The optimization model using genetic algorithm demonstrates high energy and exergy efficiencies as well as low total annual costs in both cold and hot modes.
