Constructed wetland substrates: A review on development, function mechanisms, and application in contaminants removal

Zehua Ji et al.

Summary: Constructed wetlands (CWs) are a cost-effective and efficient method for wastewater treatment, with substrates playing a crucial role in influencing performance and sustainability. There has been a growing demand for substrates to enhance CWs' ability to treat more complex contaminants from various sources. Extensive research has been conducted on different substrate materials and their characteristics to improve efficiency and sustainability of CWs.

Effects of various antibiotics on aerobic nitrogen removal and antibiotic degradation performance: Mechanism, degradation pathways, and microbial community evolution

Donghui Liang et al.

Summary: The selective inhibitory effects of various antibiotics on aerobic nitrogen removal were investigated, showing different removal efficiencies and degradation pathways for different antibiotics. Antibiotics in aquaculture ponds from Guilin, South of China: Occurrence, distribution, and health risk assessment

Jianlin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and distribution of seven antibiotics in aquaculture areas in Guilin, South of China, revealing relatively low concentrations of antibiotics but potential risks to microorganisms and organic matter in water and sediment. The results suggest that antibiotics may not pose a direct risk to human health via dietary exposure, but could lead to secondary pollution in sediments, thus requiring heightened local management awareness.

Bibliometric analysis of microbial sulfonamide degradation: Development, hotspots and trend directions

Luping Zeng et al.

Summary: Microbial sulfonamide degradation (MSD) is an efficient and safe treatment method in natural and engineered ecosystems. A bibliometric analysis of data from Web of Science (WoS) and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) was conducted to understand the research status and trends of MSD. China, Germany, Spain, the United States, and Australia were the leading countries in terms of high-impact publications, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences was the leading research institution. The top journal in terms of citations was Chemosphere. MSD research has evolved from basic laboratory experiments to complex environmental microbial communities and molecular mechanisms. Proteobacteria, Gammaproteobacteria, Burkholderiales, and Alcaligenaceae were the most frequently observed classifications, while Bacillus, Pseudomonas, and Achromobacter were the top three genera in MSD research.

Evaluation of wetland substrates for veterinary antibiotics pollution control in lab-scale systems

Lin Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the behaviors of veterinary antibiotics and corresponding antibiotic resistant genes in different substrate systems. The results showed differences in removal efficiency of antibiotics and ARG enrichment levels among the substrates. Oyster shell exhibited the lowest total relative abundance of ARGs, and substrate pH and system bacterial diversity had significant impacts on ARG enrichment.

New insights on the combined removal of antibiotics and ARGs in urban wastewater through the use of two configurations of vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands

Cristina Avila et al.

Summary: The study investigated the removal of 49 antibiotics and 11 selected antibiotic resistance genes in two vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands. It was found that the partially saturated unit (SVF) showed more significant removal of certain antibiotics compared to the unsaturated unit (UVF). All selected antibiotic resistance genes were detected in influent wastewater and in the biofilm of both wetlands, with varying removal rates.

Performance and bacterial community dynamics of hydroponically grown Iris pseudacorus L. during the treatment of antibiotic-enriched wastewater at low/normal temperature

Hongbin Lu et al.

Summary: Antibiotics, particularly levofloxacin, in constructed wetlands have differential effects on pollutant removal at normal and low temperatures. Temperature and antibiotic concentration play significant roles in the removal of pollutants, with low concentrations of antibiotics promoting degradation of pollutants under normal temperature conditions. Bacterial community richness is higher and diversity lower at normal temperature, while bacterial genera and functions are greatly influenced by antibiotic concentration, temperature, and test time. This study identifies antibiotic and low temperature-resistant microorganisms, providing valuable information for understanding the ecological effects of levofloxacin.

Improving removal of antibiotics in constructed wetland treatment systems based on key design and operational parameters: A review

Yujie He et al.

Summary: The review highlights the importance of optimizing flow configuration, selecting plant species, and compensating for low microbial activity at low temperature for efficient removal of antibiotics in CWTS. Furthermore, a hybrid-CWTS that integrates horizontal and vertical subsurface flow could offer sufficient removal performance at reasonable cost. Future research should focus on elucidating key mechanisms for specific antibiotics removal to guide optimization of design and operational parameters.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.

Abiotic transformation and ecotoxicity change of sulfonamide antibiotics in environmental and water treatment processes: A critical review

Jingchen Li et al.

Summary: Sulfonamides are widely used antibiotics in human and animal healthcare, as well as in livestock agriculture, leading to concerns about their environmental fate and treatment technologies. The use of ·OH-based AOP has been proposed as an effective method to eliminate the toxicity of SA, although its selectivity is affected by water constituents. The future trend for SA treatment involves the use of biochar or metal-based oxidants in AOPs.
