Comparative life cycle assessment of LFP and NCM batteries including the secondary use and different recycling technologies

Jiawei Quan et al.

Summary: This study used life cycle assessment (LCA) to quantify and compare the environmental impacts of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries and lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) batteries. The results showed that NCM batteries had better overall environmental performance but shorter service life. In China, the production phase had the greatest environmental impact, and recycling of waste batteries could help mitigate environmental burdens. Optimizing the charge discharge efficiency and increasing the use of clean energy were crucial in reducing the environmental impacts of batteries over their entire life cycle.

Life Cycle Prediction Assessment of Battery Electrical Vehicles with Special Focus on Different Lithium-Ion Power Batteries in China

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: This study conducts a life cycle assessment of four different power batteries for battery electric vehicles (BEV) in China. The results show that different power batteries have different environmental impacts, with the lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery being more environmentally friendly in global warming potential and acidification potential, and the lithium-ion nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) battery being more environmentally friendly in abiotic depletion and human toxicity potential. However, the lithium titanate oxide (LTO) battery has the highest environmental impact due to its lower energy density. Overall, with improvements in battery density, charge efficiency, electricity structure, and vehicle lightweight level, BEVs based on these batteries show substantial environmental benefits.

Life cycle assessment of lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide batteries and lithium iron phosphate batteries for electric vehicles in China

Tao Feng et al.

Summary: Promoting electric vehicle use is crucial for sustainable development, but the power batteries used in these vehicles present resource and environmental challenges. This study focuses on the two most common battery types used in the Chinese market, and through life cycle assessment, finds that while lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NCM) batteries have higher energy efficiency during use, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries have better overall environmental performance. Battery recycling is identified as an effective means to reduce resource and environmental impact and achieve sustainable development.

A comparative life cycle assessment on lithium-ion battery: Case study on electric vehicle battery in China considering battery evolution

Shuoyao Wang et al.

Summary: China has become the largest market for electric vehicles, leading to a rapid expansion of the lithium-ion battery market and the generation of a significant amount of waste batteries. Research shows that as battery types evolve, the environmental impact and profitability of the waste battery recycling industry in China become uncertain. Therefore, it is crucial for China to focus on improving the collection rate of waste batteries to establish an efficient and sustainable waste battery recycling industry.
