Electrochemical and microbiological response of exoelectrogenic biofilm to polyethylene microplastics in water

Song Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of polyethylene (PE) microplastics on exoelectrogenic biofilm. The experiments reveal that an increase in PE microplastics concentration leads to a decline in current density and abundance of electroactive bacteria in the biofilm. The viability of the biofilm is also restrained by the presence of PE microplastics, resulting in higher system electrode resistance. Furthermore, microbial community richness and expression of electron transfer-related genes decrease after the addition of microplastics.

Responses of mesophilic anaerobic sludge microbiota to thermophilic conditions: Implications for start-up and operation of thermophilic THP-AD systems

Liang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of thermophilic conditions on the assembly of microbial communities and their effects on anaerobic digestion (AD) ecosystem function. The inocula from full-scale systems showed greater resilience to thermophilic environment and demonstrated higher methane production. Deterministic processes played a dominant role in community assembly, but stochastic processes were more influential in dysfunctional AD ecosystems. The thermophilic environment exerted strong selective pressure on microbial network structures.

Deeper insights into the effects of substrate to inoculum ratio selection on the relationship of kinetic parameters, microbial communities, and key metabolic pathways during the anaerobic digestion of food waste

Yanzeng Li et al.

Summary: This study comprehensively explored the effects of different substrate to inoculum ratios (S/I) on the kinetic parameters, microbial communities, and metabolic pathways during the anaerobic digestion process of food waste. The results showed that low S/I ratios were favorable for methanogenesis, while high S/I ratios led to irreversible acidification. S/I = 1:3 had the highest methane yield, more apparent microbial cooperation, and the highest abundance of key enzymes involved in the methanogenesis pathway.

Jianan Niu et al.

Summary: This study found that nanoscale zero valent iron (NZVI) can effectively recover from acidification during anaerobic digestion and improve methane production. Compared to microscale iron, the optimal dosage of NZVI is lower and it can enhance microbial syntrophism.

In-situ biogas upgrading with H2 addition in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) digesting waste activated sludge

Akira Hafuka et al.

Summary: This study investigates the in-situ biogas upgrading using an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The addition of hydrogen gas and biogas recirculation effectively increased the methane content in the biogas. The AnMBR system achieved higher methane content and better degradation of solid compared to a continuously-stirred tank reactor.

Contributions of MOF-808 to methane production from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Haoyu Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of MOF-808 on the hydrolysis and syntrophic methanogenesis of waste activated sludge (WAS) during anaerobic digestion (AD). The results show that MOF-808 enhances methane production and the proportion of methane in biogas, as well as improves the enzymatic hydrolysis of sludge and the abiotic hydrolysis of sludge extracellular organic substances. MOF-808 also accelerates the bioconversion of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) to methane, and enriches hydrogen-producing bacteria and mixotrophic methanogens in the microbial community structure of the sludge samples.

How does temperature regulate anaerobic digestion?

Erqi Nie et al.

Summary: Temperature plays a crucial role in anaerobic digestion by shaping microbial ecosystems and regulating stability performance. While previous studies have discussed microbial responses to temperature changes, there is still a gap in understanding the regulation of temperature gradient on microbial communities. Adapting microorganisms to extreme temperatures could open up possibilities for industrial applications and sanitation purposes.

In-situ methane enrichment in continuous anaerobic digestion of pig slurry by zero-valent iron nanoparticles addition under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

Miriam Cerrillo et al.

Summary: The addition of zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) had different effects on methane production during anaerobic digestion of pig slurry under mesophilic and thermophilic conditions. Batch experiments showed inhibition of methane production at all tested dosages in mesophilic conditions, while boosting methane production at the lowest dosage in thermophilic conditions. Continuous operation with nZVI addition resulted in increased methane content in biogas, with a significant increase in methane production rate compared to the control in both temperature ranges. The oxidation state of nZVI exhibited immediate oxidation upon contact with substrate and gradual oxidation during reactor operation.
