Using life cycle assessment to quantify the environmental benefit of upcycling vine shoots as fillers in biocomposite packaging materials

Gregoire David et al.

Summary: The study indicates that bioplastics are currently less eco-friendly than polypropylene (PP), but incorporating vine shoot particles in composite materials can enhance environmental benefits. Different materials have varying requirements for filler content and impact categories, suggesting the optimization of polymer production steps and increasing filler content in composite materials.

Catalytic pyrolysis of pine needles with nickel doped gamma-alumina: Reaction kinetics, mechanism, thermodynamics and products analysis

Shubhi Gupta et al.

Summary: The study aimed to explore the catalytic effect of nickel doped gamma-alumina on the thermal decomposition behavior of waste pine needle biomass. The results showed a significant reduction in activation energy and an improvement in reaction rate after incorporating catalysts. Ni/Al2O3 catalyst showed more promising results in terms of oxygen reduction potential and production of hydrocarbon and phenolic compounds.

Urban parks and gardens green waste: A valuable resource for the production of fillers for biocomposites applications

Amandine Viretto et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of using urban green waste as a resource for lignocellulosic fillers production through dry fractionation. Five fractions with controlled composition were produced, with the branches-rich fraction displaying the best reinforcing effect in biocomposites. The dry fractionation and formulation steps can be adapted depending on the targeted application.

Are Natural-Based Composites Sustainable?

Luis Suarez et al.

Summary: This paper assesses the sustainability aspects of polymer composites, specifically focusing on the matrix and reinforcement/filler components. While most studies analyze composite performance, there is a lack of attention on life cycle assessment, biodegradation, and recyclability of these materials. More research is needed to clarify the potential environmental benefits in comparison to other types of composites.

Biodegradable green composites: It's never too late to mend

Kiana Rafiee et al.

Summary: Biocomposites, made up of polymeric matrix and reinforcing fibers, have emerged as innovative materials and alternatives to traditional composites. To be classified as green and sustainable, biocomposites must align with green chemistry principles. This review discusses recent advancements in biocomposite development, addressing sourcing, synthesis, modification methods, and end-of-life options such as biodegradation and recyclability. Case studies focusing on poly(lactic) acid- and mycelium-based biocomposites are presented to further explore these aspects.
