Enhanced Slow Sand Filtration for the Removal of Micropollutants from Groundwater

Chi Thanh Vu et al.

Summary: The study found that enhanced slow sand filtration using graphene oxide-coated sand can effectively remove micropollutants and improve water quality significantly. Techno-economic analysis showed that while using GO-coated sand may increase costs, the extra cost can be kept within a reasonable range for community or household-level applications.

Fabrication of a water-retaining, slow-release fertilizer based on nanocomposite double-network hydrogels via ion-crosslinking and free radical polymerization

Yanmin Shen et al.

Summary: A new type of water-retaining, slow-release fertilizer based on double-network hydrogels was fabricated, and the presence of halloysite nanotubes clearly adjusted the swelling and release properties of the fertilizer. Kinetic modeling indicated a Fickian diffusion mechanism for the swelling and slow release behavior, suggesting good prospects for application.

Two strains of Luteovulum sphaeroides (purple nonsulfur bacteria) promote rice cultivation in saline soils by increasing available phosphorus

Nguyen Quoc Khuong et al.

Summary: Purple nonsulfur bacteria were found to enhance rice growth and grain yield in saline soils by releasing normally unavailable phosphorus. The inoculated soils showed increased pH, decreased electrical conductivity, higher P accumulation in rice plants, reduced need for chemical P fertilizer, and increased NH4+ and potassium concentrations. Rice grain yields were proportional to the inoculated bacterial populations.

Low-cost laterite-laden household filters for removing arsenic from groundwater in Vietnam and waste management

Thi Hai Nguyen et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of a low-cost natural laterite from Vietnam in removing arsenic from contaminated groundwater in household filters. After seven months of continuous operation, the treatment effect met the local and WHO drinking water standards. Through a solidification/stabilization process, the mobility of arsenic in the waste was controlled, and the concrete brick products showed suitable compressive strength for construction use.
