Impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on grocery retail operations: An analytical model

Mohammad Delasay et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has brought significant changes to grocery retailers, requiring them to adapt their operations to new health concerns and shifting customer behaviors. This study uses economic models to analyze the impact of pandemic conditions on grocery retailers, specifically looking at changes in customer shopping behavior and the influence of occupancy limitation guidelines. The findings reveal that while occupancy limitations reduce in-store foot traffic, they do not necessarily result in profit decline. Additionally, the study highlights the externality impact of online customers on in-store shopping behavior and the potential influence of delivery and curbside pickup services on store traffic and profit. Overall, this research provides valuable insights for retailers regarding occupancy limitations and health safety measures, and identifies operating modes that can help reduce infection risk and increase profit.

Retail store customer flow and COVID-19 transmission

Robert A. Shumsky et al.

Summary: The study finds that restricting customer flow to one-way movement can effectively reduce the rate of COVID-19 transmission in retail stores, unless wake exposure is the dominant mode. Interventions such as reducing customer speed variance and throughput control are effective regardless of the dominant transmission mode. The optimal throughput rate drops rapidly as the population prevalence of COVID-19 rises.
