Corn Nitrogen Nutrition Index Prediction Improved by Integrating Genetic, Environmental, and Management Factors with Active Canopy Sensing Using Machine Learning

Dan Li et al.

Summary: This study found that incorporating genetic, environmental, and management information with canopy sensing data can significantly improve the prediction and diagnosis of corn nitrogen status. Support vector regression and random forest regression models performed better in predicting corn nitrogen status compared to single vegetation indices or combinations of indices.

Global meta-analysis of nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency in rice, wheat and maize

Xing Yu et al.

Summary: Almost half of global nitrogen fertilizer is applied to rice, wheat, and maize, but a large proportion is not directly taken up, causing detrimental effects on the environment. Fertilizer management, climate, and soil factors have important influences on nitrogen fertilizer use efficiency (REN) in these crops. Organic fertilizer and single applications generally have low values of REN. REN increases with growing season temperature for rice and wheat, but decreases for maize. Soil factors such as organic carbon content, pH, and clay content also affect REN, but this depends on the crop type.

Integrating satellite-derived climatic and vegetation indices to predict smallholder maize yield using deep learning

Liangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: Timely and accurately estimating smallholder crop yield is crucial for optimizing agronomic management and reducing poverty. Integration of field-surveyed yields and geospatial data in China allowed for effective prediction of maize yield, with green chlorophyll vegetation index identified as the most suitable and a combination of input variables explaining 70% of yield variation. The Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model showed superior performance in predicting maize yield compared to other methods, showcasing the potential of using publicly available data for large-scale crop yield estimation in smallholder systems.
