Exploring circular economies in the built environment from a complex systems perspective: A systematic review and conceptual model at the city scale

Fernanda Cruz Rios et al.

Summary: This study investigates the complex systems of the circular economy (CE) in the built environment through a systematic literature review and thematic analysis. A conceptual model is proposed to illustrate the functionality and interconnections of CE in urban settings. The study is important for policymakers, designers, and researchers to better understand CE in urban environments and ethically design interventions to achieve circularity goals.

Building material stock analysis is critical for effective circular economy strategies: a comprehensive review

Rezvan Mohammadiziazi et al.

Summary: Tracking the material composition, quantity and location of building materials through building material stock analysis (MSA) is crucial for promoting the reuse and repurposing of materials in the circular economy. However, there is a need to standardize methods, data and scope in this area. This study reviewed and evaluated 62 articles on building MSA, identifying barriers, gaps and opportunities, and provided a comprehensive directory of building archetypes, references and materials for future researchers.

Estimating the construction material stocks in two Canadian cities: A case study of Kitchener and Waterloo

Aida Mollaei et al.

Summary: The growing global population and urban land expansion have led to an increase in material consumption in cities, with construction materials being the most widely used. Material stock accounting was used to estimate the quantity of construction materials in Kitchener and Waterloo, revealing historical material use patterns and projected future consumption. The study's findings will assist cities in implementing circular economy practices and urban mining strategies amidst increasing material consumption and waste generation.
