Alloy information helps prioritize material criticality lists

T. E. Graedel et al.

Summary: Materials scientists often overlook the criticality and reuse potential of materials, especially those used mainly as alloying elements. This study identifies six metals, including dysprosium, samarium, vanadium, niobium, tellurium, and gallium, which deserve increased attention in terms of their unlikely recycling potential and low functional end-of-life recycling rates.

Quantification of methods used in field metallography using the example of quality assurance measures for a circular economy for high-alloy steels

P. Kronenberg et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop an on-site metallography method to characterize carbide banding in cold-work steels using cellulose acetate film replication. It is demonstrated that grinding the sample surface with P1500 mesh SiC abrasive paper and etching it with V(2)A etchant or nitric acid for 7 minutes is sufficient for removing the matrix and leaving negative impressions of the carbides on the film. The negative replica can be studied under a reflected light microscope to characterize the carbide banding.

Mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories

Antoine Beylot et al.

Summary: This article proposes an approach to account for mineral resource dissipation in life cycle inventories, with the application to analyze the direct dissipation of mineral resources along the primary production of copper. The results show that the production of 1 kg of copper cathode generates 0.88 kg of direct dissipative flows of resources, primarily calcium carbonate, copper, and to a lower extent iron. The developed approach may change the interpretation of results regarding mineral resources in LCA and have implications on methodological aspects and data requirements.

Steel scrap generation in the EU-28 since 1946-Sources and composition

Sabine Dworak et al.

Summary: The composition of steel scrap in the EU-28 has significantly changed since 1946, with most of it now being post-consumer scrap. Due to the high levels of tramp elements in scrap steel, it can only be utilized by dilution with primary iron sources. Research suggests that emerging economies will see a significant increase in fabrication and post-consumer scrap in the future.

Circularity for circularity's sake? Scoping review of assessment methods for environmental performance in the circular economy.

Steve Harris et al.

Summary: The concept of Circular Economy is gaining global attention, with a focus on scientific evidence-based implementation to improve environmental performance. Current research primarily focuses on the micro-level, lacking connections between micro and macro levels. Industrial symbiosis shows potential at the meso-level, but further research is needed to assess its environmental contribution.
