Analysis and identification of pollution sources of comprehensive river water quality: Evidence from two river basins in China

Hanxiao Xu et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the effects of pollution sources from cultivation, livestock farming, aquaculture, industry, and domestic activities on the overall water quality in the Yangtze River and Yellow River Basins. It finds that industrial pollution is the major source of water pollution in China, followed by domestic pollution and agricultural pollution. The impact of pollution sources on water quality varies significantly from basin to basin. Cultivation and aquaculture are the main agricultural sources of water pollution in the two basins respectively. Cultivation pollution sources have a seasonal variation in their impact on water quality. In the long term, the negative impact of cultivation and livestock farming on water quality pollution forms a cumulative effect. Therefore, targeted regional pollution management and inter-basin and inter-regional synergistic control are recommended in environmental pollution control processes.

Comparison of influence factors on horizontal ground heat exchanger performance through numerical simulation and gray correlation analysis

Yu Shi et al.

Summary: The performance of the horizontal ground heat exchanger (HGHE) is sensitive to climatic conditions, and this study comprehensively analyzed and compared the influence of key factors on the HGHE performance through numerical simulation. Results showed that non-consideration of climatic conditions could underestimate HGHE outlet temperature, and intermittent operation mode had better performance than continuous mode. Increasing installation depth and improving grout thermal conductivity were beneficial for HGHE performance. Groundwater flow velocity, circulation flow rate, precipitation, and air temperature were identified as the most significant impact factors. Subsurface water flow, injection mass flow rate, and climatic conditions should be prioritized in the optimal design of HGHE.

Xiang Long et al.

Summary: This study proposes an evaluation index system and analyzes the urban water environment carrying capacity of Beijing from 2008 to 2016, as well as the coupling coordination degree of each subsystem. The results show that the water environment carrying capacity index of Beijing is improving over the years, with ecological water usage rate, energy conservation and environmental protection expenditure, and per capita water resources being the most influential indicators. The resilience subsystem has the strongest correlation with the water environment, followed by the pressure subsystem. The coordination degree is at a high level of coupling.

Effects of stand and landscape level variables on shoot damage ratios caused by shoot beetles in Southwest China

Linfeng Yu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine the effects of stand-level and landscape-level variables on shoot damage ratio (SDR) caused by shoot beetles during outbreaks. The results showed that both stand-level and landscape-level variables had significant effects on SDR. SDR was higher in plots closer to roads and severely damaged forest areas in the previous year. Edge density and forest cover had a negative impact on SDR, while mean shape index and aspect had a positive impact.
