Evaluation of SARS-COV-2 transmission and infection in airliner cabins

Wensi Wang et al.

Summary: Commercial airliners have played a significant role in the global spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Using computational fluid dynamics, this study simulated the transmission of the virus on two flights. The results suggest that wearing masks and reducing conversation frequency can help mitigate the risk of exposure to the virus.

Pollutant capture efficiencies in and around the opening surface of a fume hood under realistic conditions

Ryota Muta et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the pollutant capture efficiency of a fume hood using computational fluid dynamics and quantitatively evaluated the impact of ventilation efficiency indices. The results showed that the presence of workers did not significantly affect the pollutant capture efficiency, while changing the exhaust airflow rate did impact the distribution of pollutants in the chamber.

Investigation of airborne particle exposure in an office with mixing and displacement ventilation

Sumei Liu et al.

Summary: Effective ventilation is crucial in reducing the spread of COVID-19 in buildings. This study compared the performance of a mixing ventilation (MV) system and a displacement ventilation (DV) system in terms of air temperature and particle concentration. Increasing the ventilation rate reduced the particle concentration, but the improvement was not proportional to the ventilation rate. The DV system had a higher ventilation effectiveness than the MV system, making it a better choice for indoor air quality.

A holistic performance assessment of duct-type electrostatic precipitators

Pan Wang et al.

Summary: Epidemiological surveys have shown a significant association between indoor airborne particle exposure and adverse health effects. The performance of commercially available duct-type electrostatic precipitators (ESPs) with and without dielectric coatings was evaluated, and ESPs with dielectric coatings showed enhanced removal efficiency of submicron particles and lower energy consumption compared to ESPs without dielectric coatings. The comprehensive evaluation of ESP performance should consider multiple criteria, including filtration efficiency for submicron particles and ozone emission rates.

Sequential air pollution emission estimation using a hybrid deep learning model and health-related ventilation control in a pig building

Qiuju Xie et al.

Summary: This study proposes a deep learning-driven model to estimate the emissions of ammonia, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide from pig buildings. It also suggests optimal ventilation control strategies to improve indoor air quality and health. Experimental results show that the model has high prediction accuracy and provides a feasible method for estimating air pollution emissions and ventilation control in pig buildings.

Effects of human walking on the capture efficiency of range hood in residential kitchen

Lipeng Lv et al.

Summary: The study investigated the flow characteristics induced by human walking and the effect on range hood performance in residential kitchens using transient CFD simulation. Results showed that human walking process could be divided into five stages, and the interaction between wake and thermal plume was the main reason for thermal plume fluctuation. The study also introduced the air curtain range hood to resist the effect of human walking, showing that it could prevent the effect with less air volume increment compared to increasing exhaust rate, thus saving energy.
