More than recycling - The potential of the circular economy shown by a case study of the metal working industry

W. Hagedorn et al.

Summary: The steel industry accounts for 25% of all industrial greenhouse gas emissions. Besides recycling, the circular economy offers strategies to increase material efficiency and reduce the demand for primary raw materials. A case study on industrial machining illustrates how implementing various circular strategies can improve production processes and increase material efficiency. The analysis shows that the three overarching strategies of the circular economy contribute to a significant increase in material efficiency and have a positive effect on overall environmental performance.

Separate Reclamation of Oil and Surfactant from Oil-in-Water Emulsion with a CO2-Responsive Material

Ya Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports a CO2-responsive material that can extract emulsified oil and demulsify oil droplets, allowing for separate reclamation of oil and surfactant. The material exhibits a high adsorption capacity for emulsified oil and can switch its surface wettability to achieve the separation of oil and surfactant. High rates of oil removal, oil recovery, and surfactant recovery are maintained during repeated adsorption/desorption operations.

Evaluation and comparison of mineralogical, micromeritics and rheological properties of waste machining chips, coal fly ash particulates with metal and ceramic powders

Amarjit Singh et al.

Summary: This article presents a detailed study of the mineralogy, micromeritics, and rheology of various materials, including powders and metal chips. The density and morphology of the particles were found to greatly influence their properties. The study also suggests that waste metallic chips can be recycled through powder metallurgy, saving time compared to ball milling.

Production, characterisation and utilisation of grinding swarf/feedstock for synthesis of metal matrix composite through powder metallurgy process: A short communication

Amarjit Singh et al.

Summary: This article demonstrates an innovative idea of converting grinding swarf into metal matrix composite (MMC). The grinding swarf produced during a specific operation was thoroughly characterized and found suitable for the powder metallurgy process. By compacting and sintering the feedstock composed of steel chips and iron oxide particles, the MMC with excellent physio-mechanical properties was synthesized.
