Biochar co-doped with nitrogen and boron switching the free radical based peroxydisulfate activation into the electron-transfer dominated nonradical process

Jibo Dou et al.

Summary: In this study, N/B co-doped biochars were used as metal-free activators of peroxydisulfate (PDS) for tetracycline degradation, and the roles of dopants as well as the relative contribution of radical vs nonradical oxidations were comprehensively investigated. The findings demonstrated that co-doping N and B into biochars not only enhanced catalytic activity, but also shifted the PDS-activated process from radical to electron transfer-dominated nonradical pathway. The study provided new insights into the critical role of heteroatom-doped carbocatalysts in PDS nonradical activation.

Synthesizing and characterizing Fe3O4 embedded in N-doped carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar as a persulfate activator for sulfamethoxazole degradation

Tong Liu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen-doped magnetic carbon nanotubes-bridged biochar (Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC) was prepared and showed excellent capacity in activating persulfate for sulfamethoxazole (SMX) degradation. A direct electron transfer regime involving surface-bound metastable complexes was found to play a decisive role in the Fe3O4@NCNTs-BC800/peroxydisulfate (PDS) system. The differences in degradation performances and activation regimes were attributed to the surface hydroxyl groups of carbon-based catalysts and the structure discrepancies between PMS and PDS.

Biochar loaded on MnFe2O4 as Fenton catalyst for Rhodamine B removal: Characterizations, catalytic performance, process optimization and mechanism

Zhuoying Cheng et al.

Summary: In order to reduce the adverse effects of dyes on the environment and health, a series of MnFe2O4-wood flour biochar (MFO-WFB) carbon materials were prepared for effective heterogeneous photo-Fenton degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). The introduction of wood flour biochar increased the specific surface area and reduced the aggregation of magnetic nanoparticles, leading to enhanced catalytic activity of MFO-WFB for RhB degradation under optimal conditions of 0.6 g/L MFO-WFB-1.0, 115 mM H2O2, and pH = 4.8. Hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radicals were identified as the main active radicals for the catalyzed photo-Fenton degradation of RhB, and a possible mechanism was proposed based on radical capture experiments and electron spin resonance analysis.
