Analytical and medico-legal problems linked to the presence of delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-8-THC): Results from urine drug testing in Sweden

Anders Helander et al.

Summary: A new interfering peak was discovered during routine urine drug testing for cannabis at the Karolinska University Laboratory in Sweden, which was identified as delta-8-THC-COOH and caused analytical and medico-legal concerns.

A validated method for the simultaneous quantification of cannabidiol, Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, and their metabolites in human plasma and application to plasma samples from an oral cannabidiol open-label trial

Richard C. Kevin et al.

Summary: In this study, a method for the simultaneous quantification of CBD, THC and their major Phase I metabolites was developed, optimized and validated according to FDA guidelines. The method is accurate, reproducible, sensitive, and can be carried out in high-throughput 96-well formats for larger scale clinical trials. Deuterated internal standards were crucial to account for variable matrix effects between plasma lots. The application of the method to plasma samples from individuals undergoing oral CBD treatment in an open-label trial of CBD effects in anxiety disorders demonstrated its immediate utility for ongoing and upcoming clinical trials, with potential to accommodate additional metabolites as analytical reference materials become commercially available.

Summary: Research has shown that under laboratory conditions, 7-COOH-CBD does not produce false-positive results for THC-COOH, and no significant conversion of 7-COOH-CBD to THC-COOH was observed in NLCP-certified laboratories.
