Enhancement of Singlet Fission Yield by Hindering Excimer Formation in Perylene Film

Zhiyong Zhang et al.

Summary: The research demonstrates that the presence of four tert-butyl groups significantly influences the molecular packing and singlet fission efficiency in the perylene film, completely suppressing excimer formation. Furthermore, the spatial configuration plays a key role in tuning the ratio between excimer formation and singlet fission.

Dynamic signatures of electronically nonadiabatic coupling in sodium hydride: a rigorous test for the symmetric quasi-classical model applied to realistic, ab initio electronic states in the adiabatic representation

Justin J. Talbot et al.

Summary: This study presents computational predictions of population transfer in sodium hydride (NaH) through avoided crossings in nonadiabatic molecular dynamics. The results show that population transfer occurs between 15 and 30 fs when strongly nonadiabatic coupling is present. The quasi-classical and Ehrenfest models perform remarkably well against the quantum dynamics benchmark.

Exciton Dynamics of a Diketo-Pyrrolopyrrole Core for All Low-Lying Electronic Excited States Using Density Functional Theory-Based Methods

Anjay Manian et al.

Summary: This article highlights the importance of ab initio treatments of interexcited state internal conversion (IC) and their potential applications in molecular photophysics. By including this mechanism, more efficient synthesis of chromophores for photon-harvesting applications can be achieved. Using density functional theory (DFT), the authors studied the exciton dynamics and found that same-spin transfer mechanisms dominate over spin-flipping intersystem crossing (ISC) rates, with only the first singlet excited state showing a reasonable probability of triplet exciton generation.

Summary: This study compares the performances of various wave function methods and time-dependent density-functional theory under different conditions, highlighting the significant impact of gauge choice on oscillator strengths for ADC(2) and CC2. Moreover, it suggests that the accuracy and consistency obtained with the second-order wave function approaches ADC(2) and CC2 do not clearly outperform those of TD-DFT.

Singlet Exciton Dynamics of Perylene Diimide- and Tetracene-Based Hetero/Homogeneous Substrates via an Ab Initio Kinetic Monte Carlo Model

A. Manian et al.

Summary: This study focuses on singlet exciton dynamics within a typical LSC device, utilizing rejection-free kinetic Monte Carlo methods and ab initio rate constants computed using time-dependent density functional theory-based approaches. Results indicate that PDI-based substrates exhibit enhanced singlet exciton transport properties compared to tetracene, with slightly improved transport seen in substrates with dipole-aligned chromophores. Additionally, simulations of a PDI-tetracene substrate show that transport is primarily mediated by PDI due to asymmetrical transport rates between the dyes, with implications for future LSC design.

Efficient enumeration of bosonic configurations with applications to the calculation of non-radiative rates

Robert A. Shaw et al.

Summary: This research introduces algorithms for efficiently enumerating configuration spaces, with applications in calculating non-radiative rates and providing an open-source implementation. Configuration spaces are present in various areas of physics, and enumerating all possible configurations in bosonic systems is a challenging problem. Three new algorithms are proposed in this study that are several orders of magnitude more efficient than the naive brute force approach.

Summary: This article explores correlated studies on a test set of 36 small molecules using both wavefunction and density functional methods. The research focuses on the effect of correlation on exotic response properties and benchmarks the performance of density functional approximations against CCSD and/or MP2. A more detailed classification of molecular systems based on their response to generally nonuniform magnetic fields is proposed, with consideration given to the relation of orientation to different qualitative responses.

Ultrafast spectroscopy reveals singlet fission, ionization and excimer formation in perylene film

Wenjun Ni et al.

Summary: Singlet exciton fission (SF) is a spin-allowed process that can enhance the efficiency of photovoltaic devices by creating two triplet excitons from one singlet exciton. The study of excited state dynamics in perylene film shows potential for high triplet formation quantum yield, singlet fission, and the competition of other relaxation channels. Exciton self-trapping by crystal lattice distortions within picoseconds highlights the simplicity and potential of perylene films in SF-based photovoltaic applications.

How important are the residual nonadiabatic couplings for an accurate simulation of nonadiabatic quantum dynamics in a quasidiabatic representation?

Seonghoon Choi et al.

Summary: The study introduces a method to assess the potential errors introduced by neglecting residual couplings by comparing quantum dynamics simulations with or without these couplings. The results show that neglecting residual couplings can lead to inaccurate dynamics, while simulations with the exact quasidiabatic Hamiltonian always yield accurate results.

Benchmarking density functional theory methods for modelling cationic metal-argon complexes

Laia Delgado-Callico et al.

Summary: Noble gas chemistry is intriguing due to the ability of noble gases to form chemical bonds with metal ions, despite having closed electronic configurations. The theoretical descriptions of metal ion-noble gas complexes are still debated, highlighting the need for accurate experimental data. Infrared spectra of MArn+ (n = 3-5; M = Au, Ag, Pd) complexes were used as benchmark data, with varying levels of theory providing differing degrees of agreement with the experimental results.(Functionals of a higher level of complexity do not consistently provide a better agreement with the experiment; this is particularly the case for the B3LYP hybrid functional that performs worse than the PBE GGA functional.)The inclusion of dispersion corrections and the use of large basis sets are crucial for understanding the interaction between M+ and argon atoms.

Summary: A concise model is presented to predict the photoluminescent properties of compounds from first principles, discussing formalism required for computing fluorescence, Internal Conversion, and Inter-System Crossing. The study demonstrates promising results for photoluminescent quantum yield in small compounds, with rate constants comparing well to experiment despite overestimated triplet energies. The methodology appears sound at the quantum chemistry level and could be important in predicting properties of larger systems.
